Plate pastrami source? I need one! Wed, 08/16/06 10:35 PM (permalink)
The last place that sold plate pastrami in this area stopped carrying it. It wasn't even good, it was full of gristle and difficult to chew.

I'm not interested in brisket pastrami,(Boar's Head), pastrami rounds, or any substitutes.

I'd like to find a source for old fashioned,(plate beef, peppery, fatty), pastrami, the kind that I had 30 years ago. It was expensive then and I imagine it's more expensive now.

I emailed a couple of companies and found that one smoked their pastrami and the other just cured it. I'm looking for the Kosher/Jewish type that used to be available in the Northeast, NY, NJ, CT area.

I'd be glad to pay a high price for it, I'd just like to find what I'm looking for.

Please don't respond unless you've actually purchased it. There are quite a few suggestions available in Google, and I've seen them all.

Thanks all.

If you're not near the Carnegie Deli, but near a Costco, they now sell Carnegie's pastrami vacuum sealed. Very good ,I like it

If you're serious about plate, you are going to have to work with a meat packer. Finding plate pastrami is not something that is going to be easy. Supermarkets and small butchers aren't going to have it.

My husband, would NEVER settle for less than the best, when it comes to FINE pastrami!

Of course, my husband is an EXPERT on pastrami.

I live in DC area and would be glad to drive to that outpost called Colombia Md (I think it is referred to as the atificial community on the artifical lake) for real pastrami. Pray tell; where would this wonderful establishment be located?

I cannot even find brisket pastrami at my local grocery stores. GOOD LUCK.

I thought all pastrami started out as brisket?

                  Oh no...

                  Beef Rib -- Blade Meat:

A small specialty beef cut with exceptional taste that offers all a tremendous opportunity for taste innovation.

Rib Blade Meat, a flat, somewhat thin piece of beef, consists of muscles that are immediately below and above the blade bone and related cartilage of the primal rib.

I found a source: Niman Ranch

                    http://www.nimanranch.com/

It looks like the real deal. You have to buy a 2 piece/5lb cryo pack. With s&h it comes out to about $12/lb, not bad considering I can't find it around here.

If I can find someone who's willing to go half with me, I'll get it and report back. (I wouldn't be able to finish 5 lbs. and I don't want to freeze it).

Although I live in NJ, plate pastrami is so hard to find.
The Jewish style deli's are falling to the wayside one by one.
When I need a good plate pastrami fix, I also use Costco for
plate. Its $9.99 for about a pound and a half and pretty damn
                      good.

Try the Mill Basin Deli at

                        http://www.pastrami.net/

I've ordered it on line a few times and found it to be great pastrami. The cut appears to be plate. Better prices than the other NY delis.
