Plz help me: chocolate covered cream filled pastry Thu, 02/19/04 2:36 AM (permalink)
A very dear friend of mine would LOVE to try something he always had as a child... it was his favorite treat. He and his mother would go to a Mrs. Baird's Thrift store that had breads, pastries, and many snacks. He distinctively remembers going there for ONE THING! It was in the shape of a cow patty sort of as he has described it, thick and wide, cream filled and covered in chocolate. PLEASE HELP ME if you remember these or something like them! I'd love to figure out what they were called.

Could it have been a Moon Pie?

Thanks for the help guys, but it wasn't moon pies! NO nuts either. He says the cream was out of this world good. Not sure if it was marshmallowy or not. Any more ideas?

Did you email Mrs. Baird's directly and ask for their help? They might be your best source for information. The website is http://www.mrsbairds.com

Good Idea Ribdog. I had thought about it and figured someone would know what it was sooner on here! Will write them next and see.

BTW, the filling tasted and had the texture of the Twinkie filling!

Ok all, I found out the pastry I was looking for was called French Pastry by Ms. Baird's which was famous in Texas. Thanks for the tips though. Those pastries were discontinued in 1992.

I was reading another thread about these pastries earlier, and I know I'm not alone when I say that many people wish they would start making these again. They were fantastic!

are you talking about a cream puff? a puff pastry with a custard-like cream filling?

Flowers also had something like that, in Chocolate, Vanilla (with toasted cocoanut), and strawberry. Funny oval shaped thing. Weirdest thing to someone visiting the south from NYC in the 70's and early 80's. The first time I came home from college, I made sure to bring one of each flavor to show everyone, and of course pick up a stack of Drakes' to take back. (Then, in 1985, the chocolate one would occasionally appear in NY, distributed by Operative Cake, in the Aunt Hannah label).

These were among the only Flowers cakes that were any good. Most of the rest were dry and gritty by that time.
