Anyone here tasted this stuff, and like it? What is the point of this awful liquid chalk anyhow, no way to acquire a taste for it, your thoughts?

I like it, but then, I like taro root in almost any form. If it is fresh, poi has a very delicate flavor.

CTF, if you're going to eat poi you should do it in Hawaii. It won't taste any better, but hey...you're in Hawaii! Brad

I was in Hawaii several years ago and I attended a luai. The food was very good and I had to try the poi. My personal point of view is that I did not enjoy it and only had a taste or two. I am certain that the folks that were raised on it enjoys it and I am glad they do. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

I was in high school. Went to The Islander Restaurant in Beverly Hills dressed only in bathing suits on a dare. (Another story) Ordered some fancy combo plate meal with a lot of different identifiable food items. It was served with a small bowl of sludgy light brown unknown goo. While eating our meals we each looked at that brown stuff in a quandary. Is it food? Is it edible? Is it a dip? What would we dip in it? Finally I couldn't stand the suspense so I dipped just the very tip of my finger in to the bowl. I wouldn't want too much when tasting. I tasted it. Nope, not food. Were we to wash our hands with it? When we were finished with our meals and the bathing suit-disturbed waiter brought us our bill we asked him about that strange stuff in the bowl. Poi.

It is not right for me. Others may feel differently. I personally agree with ScreamingChicken, poi should be eaten in Hawaii. That is where I tried it, and overall I enjoyed the experience, except for the taste of the poi, which was soon forgotten.

Married to a Hawaiian girl for 13 years. Even she didn't care for the it. Plenty of other family members though loved it as much as some of us like our mashed potatos. It's definately an aquired taste. And it's not even the taste, it's the texture. The taste is very neutral, so much so it's just kind of bland. The texture though has a certain "goo" to it you just don't encounter much in western food.

Tasted it only once. Grade four. School project. Yuck. Of course, i did not like the pork either, or other stuff. The teacher had prepared the meal for us children. I think the only good thing was the ambrosia salad. The leis and grass skirts..now that was fun.
