Mmmmm that peirogi pic you posted is how I like'em ... covered with what we used to call "squarkie" (I have no idea of the proper spelling)... crispy bacon bits.
It's spelled skwarki (pron. skfaarkee - with a rolled "r"). Mmmmmmm skwarki ..... (drool)
Most Roadfooders aren't normally interested in places to eat in Canada, but if anyone is ever in Toronto, the best Polish food is found on Roncesvalles Avenue (just north of The Queensway). Here's a link:
http://www.roncesvallesvillage.ca/ Restaurants like Staroploski, Zagloba, Chopin, Café Polonez serve excellent Polish foods but I have not been to any recently so can't confirm prices, changes etc.
There are also great delis like Batory Deli - which is now Super Kielbasa, Benna's Bakery & Deli, Warmia Deli with all kinds of sausages, cold foods and ready to reheat hot foods (like bigos, flaczki, pulpeciki w sosie, pierogi, beets, various soups etc) as well as excellent cakes and pastries. These stores also carry candy and canned goods etc straight off the boat from Poland. Benna's and Batory are my home away from home and when I visit Toronto, I come back with bags and bags full of goodies. (You can also find pharmacies with Polish cosmetics, travel agencies, libraries and bookstores, etc in this area if you are looking for that sort of thing).
Kitchener - home of the second largest Oktoberfest in the world after the original in Munich (located about 120 km southwest of Toronto) - has a few excellent Polish delis, namely Euro Foods on Highland Road and Nougat Bakery and Deli on Queen Street North. You can find Polish food in Waterloo at the Waterloo Farmers Market and the St. Jacob's Market.
OK, I'm tired after all that typing and need a bowl of beet soup and a nap.
