This was one poll where I didn't hesitate for a second with my answer; Bananas Foster--possibly my favorite dessert anywhere, NOLA or not!

But I gotta say, Cynder is right.  How could one of the most iconic Crescent City sweets be forgotten from that list, yet "snoballs"(?) are included.

Look, I know it's tough coming up with ideas for these polls.  I know they're just for fun and don't have any lasting meaning.  I even know there will always be some malcontent/troublemaker (not talking about you Cynder) who will find fault with any list; any poll question.  But c'mon, how do you leave beignets off a poll list of Favorite New Orleans Sweets?

    Gee whillikers,

Well now I'm starting to regret making an issue of this--beignets are beating my chosen favorite, Bananas Foster.

    Hmmph.

And with that, you are now looking at my 3,000th post.  Sorry, wish it would have been something of more substance.  But there's always 3,001...

Unbelievable--now Bananas Foster is being beat by both beignets and bread pudding!?!  Seriously people, have you ever had Bananas Foster?   I mean a really good Bananas Foster?  Those other two aren't even in the same class with Bananas Foster!

Don't get me wrong, I love beignets; had a lovely couple of late evenings, relaxing at Cafe DuMonde.  I even enjoy bread pudding at the right time in the right place, but c'mon the best bread pudding in the world can't compare with the flaming magnificence that is Bananas Foster.

I want you people who haven't voted to sit down at your computers and cast your vote for the best thing that ever came out of a Brennan's Family restaurant!  Let the world feel your love for this great and timeless dessert.

I implore you fellow Roadfooders, say "Yes!" to Bananas Foster!
    Thank you for your support.

Buddy, I think you hit the nail on the head - few people have tried bananas Foster, and even fewer have had good versions.  Good versions of bread pudding abound, and anyone who has ever been to New Orleans has been to Cafe du Monde.

    Pralines.

Okay, yes, pralines are good, too.  I loves me a good praline.

But gimme a break man, praline versus Bananas Foster???  The BF whups the praline without even breaking a sweat.

    Buddy,
I have been weened off of bananas.
But while in New Orleans last year our waiter at Arnaud's Broussard's decided it was our anniversary.  So as a treat, he brought us a dessert.  Neither of us could bear to tell him of our banana aversion, so I ate it.  And I enjoyed it, damn it.
The Pie Diva watched in horror, while eating a chocolate strawberry something.

Nowhere on Earth will you find a greater concentration of Bread Pudding in all its various kinds than in NOLA? If there's one single dessert dish that says NOLA, its Bread Pudding.

Apparently, the beignets lovers beg to differ with the both of us by a wide margin.

    Buddy.

What do they know. In reading the history of Brennan's Restaurant, I was surprised that Bananas Foster was not created until 1951. I thought it had been around much longer than that.

That's quite  a varied list.  Pralines are candy, beignets are a coffee-shop pastry, bananas foster is a dessert, as is bread pudding.

I've had french bread pudding souffle with whiskey sauce at Commander's Palace, bananas foster at Brennan's, beignets at Cafe du Monde and pralines from some shop in the french quarter.

All were pretty good, but I'd give the nod to the french bread pudding souffle.

    Here's a Emeril Lagasse Recipe I've made several times and it's good---I Guar-on-tee!

Classic New Orleans Bread Pudding with a Bourbon Sauce
    1 teaspoon unsalted butter
    4 large eggs
1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
    1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1/8 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
    1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
    1/4 cup bourbon
    2 cups half-and-half
8 slices day-old French bread, cut into 1/2-inch cubes (about 4 cups)
    1 cup raisins
1 recipe Spiced Cream, recipe follows
    Sprigs fresh mint
    Shaker confectioners' sugar

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Grease a 6-cup (9 1/4 by 5 1/4 by 2 3/4-inch) loaf pan with butter. Whisk the eggs, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and bourbon together in a large mixing bowl until very smooth. Add the half-and-half and mix well. Add the bread and raisins, and let the mixture sit for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
Pour mixture into the prepared pan. Bake until the pudding is set in the center, about 55 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes. To serve, cut the pudding into 1-inch thick slices. Lay each slice in the center of each serving plate. Spoon some of the Bourbon Sauce over the pudding. Top with the spiced cream. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint and confectioners' sugar.

    Spiced Cream:
    1 quart heavy cream
    1/4 cup granulated sugar
    1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

Beat the cream with an electric mixer on high speed in a large mixing bowl for about 2 minutes. Add the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg and beat again until the mixture thickens and forms stiff peaks, another 1 to 2 minutes.
Recipe adapted from Emeril's Creole Christmas Cookbook, by Emeril Lagasse, with Marcelle Bienvenu, published by William Morrow, 1997

Creme Brulee is an "Everywhere" kinda dessert and not necessarily perceived as a NOLA dessert. It's like apple pie - you cna get it anywhere.

Bananas Foster is waaaaay too sweet for me in the AM. If I'm in NOLA it's beignets for me with plenty of that fantastic NOLA chicory coffee.

An "OK" from Michael Hoffman--an avowed dessert hater--can there be a more robust recommendation for Bananas Foster than that?

foodbme - I don't know how old creme brulee is, but it's probably been around a lot longer than Bananas Foster and it is very popular in NOLA even though it wasn't invented here.  I do know, a close cousin, Creme au Caramel, or Burnt Cream is a New Orleans classic but you don't see it much on menus.

A buffetbuster vote...I guess if Bananas Foster doesn't win with the  quantity of votes, we'll just have to settle for quality votes.

Cliffy, we need to visit our public libraries and log on to as many computers as possible; casting a vote for Bananas Foster on each one.

Well, I did vote for it on both my work computer and home laptop, but it seems I have a lot to learn about stuffing the ballot box!  BTW, both times I have had Bananas Foster, it was in Chicago.
