Would someone please tell me what on earth a "wet walnut" is? The only image that conjures up for me is a walnut, or its kernel, in a bowl of water.

It is a syrupy/sugary sauce with walnuts in it...as opposed to plain walnuts being sprinkled on top. I had to ask someplace myself a while back.

DQ used to have a Sundae called the DixieBelle. It was basically a Hot Fudge (or Chocolate) Sundae with Pecans in Syrup on top of the Fudge topping. Later they changed the pecans from Syrup to a Carmel topping.

Want a treat? Try using some of the Praline Syrup used to flavor coffee over your Ice Cream (add the nuts and you will have a Wet-Nut Sundae!)

Dairy Queen has a wonderful Sundae selection. I enjoy their mixture of caramel, pecans and whipped cream. It is sweet and very good.

Best topping I ever had was a sundae called the "Sawdust Sundae" from the Jigger Shop in Mt. Gretna, PA. It is a typical hot fudge type sundae with nuts, whipped cream and a cherry but with a few spoonfuls of malt powder on top.

Sounds Great and it be right up my alley!!

I love a Hot Fudge Sundae from Sherman's Dairy Bar in South Haven Michigan. I order it with the usual nuts, whipped cream and a cherry but here's the kicker, I have them use malted milk ice cream. WOOOHOOO!!!!!!!

Now that I think about it, I also have a question about that. That is my favorite topping.

I wondered about Butterscotch too, thinking it might be a 'generation thing'. Being the natural search engine that I am I FORCED MYSELF to visit a local Graueter Ice Cream Parlor and inquired about 'Who buys Butterscotch ?' The manager told me that it 'tends' to be older folks who seek out the flavor. Carmel seems to have superseded the older Butterscotch as the choice in the 'brown-sugar based' type of topping. I sampled many combinations to support the discussion!
This is not a definite scientific fact...I intend to do considerable research to determine the extent and perhaps the geographic nature of the assumption. (next week at Mayfield Dairy in Athens Tennessee !!)

Al, OLDER FOLKS!!!! I am shocked.

Just kidding and you may be correct. I know that I have enjoyed butterscotch toppings for close to sixty years and maybe longer. I just cannot remember when I was five years old.

A tangent for a moment. When BUTTER-RUM Life Savers were a popular flavor, my step-father made a big deal out of 'not allowing' me to have any of his 'roll' because I wasn't "old enough". I was 7 or so years old at the time. I thought I was being so 'adult' when I finally was able to sneak some of his candy. He was doing it as a joke, but I took him very seriously (at the time) and never had more than a couple at a time to avoid the embarrassment of showing the effects of the "BUTTER-RUM"!!
I never linked the Butter-Scotch label to the beverage the way I tied Butter-Rum to it's alcoholic name.

My mother would always get pignoli nuts on her hot fudge sundaes.

I am not an "older folk" yet, but love a combo of marshmallow and butterscotch on a sundae! It makes my teeth hurt to think about all that sugar, but mmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Unfortunately, I find few places with butterscotch, and if I do, they usually don't have marshmallow.

Tony, in my earlier post about the Jigger Shop, you'd like this.....their trademark sundae is called a "Jigger" and it is made with marshmallow and butterscotch or chocolate.

Let's do the poll over. I came here to ask about butterscotch, too. My favorite treat in the world is Leon's Butter Pecan without the nuts. I used to do that when I worked there, but they won't make it without the nuts otherwise, even though I told them I'm allergic to tree nuts (I'm not, but it's worth a try if you don't like tree nuts).

I have added this place to my personal roadfood map. I have a friend in Lancaster, so I head out that way every now and them. This WILL be on my list of things to do next trip.

Well, I'm only 30 (ish), and whenever we go to the local Creamy (it's a New England thing) I get a butterscotch sundae with chocolate ice cream.

Hell, Old is a state of mind...You can get it at 30 or be like Seafarer John and be over 80 and still not have it !! We found some great Ice Cream when we lived in eastern Mass. a generation or two ago.
We are lucky to have some reasonably close by here in So Indiana.

My wife was a great fan of butterscotch but I prefer hot fudge...the real kind that requires heating over a double-boiler first and then becomes thick and rich as it cools over ice cream.

I don't know if I'm an "older one" but, in the good ol' days, Friendly's (before Hershey's bought them) used to ship their fudge in metal fudge pots. The fudge had to be heated to a particular temperature (I forgot the number), constantly monitored to prevent scorching (if it scorched, it was tossed) and then immediately brought out to a warmer in the dining area. So much better than hot fudge in a lot of places today, which is really just chocolate syrup!

My all-time favorite sundae was a waffle sundae: Toasted waffles with ice cream in the middle and covered with hot fudge! I can still taste the fudge with the waffles!

A wet walnut topping can also take on the name maple waltnut topping,i.e, mixing walnuts in a maple syrup based liquid.

Also a chocolate sundae with a dusting of malt can also be called a "Dusty Road"

This is from part of mymis-spent youth working as a soda jerk in an ice cream parlor, where we made all our own ice creams, sherberts and syrups

                                                I too am not old(ish),35
Though some teenage, whipper snapper, at the local white castle called me sir the other day I almost asked for the senior discount

Yes old or young is a state of mind, some days I feel as young as can be, then others, I need that discount.

I can honestly say... I have never met a sundae topping I did not like

Butterscotch, with a sprinkling of crushed peanuts/cashews, whipped cream and a cherry with a long stem (gotta tie the stem with your tongue )

                                                or

Hot Fudge, peanuts/cashews, whipped cream and a cherry on top

I have never had one but that sawmill sundae sounds good too.

Come to think of it why have just one, give me a banananana split any day and have 3 toppings for the price of 1.

A generation back there was an Ice Cream Parlor called HELEN GRACE's in the South Bay Center in the Redondo Beach area of L A . They had a sundae called the "Double Treat". It was two large rounded scoops of vanilla (or your choice of flavors) with Butterscotch on one and Hot Fudge on the second...This was in a banana boat sort of dish. (no banana) In addition to the usual nuts, whipped cream, and cherry garnish, the customer got two syrup pots full of Butterscotch and Hot Fudge toppings so they could add topping as needed to the sundae!
That was a real treat to a young teenager in the 50's.

Someone mentioned Friendlys...They used to have a sundae called the Swiss Almond Chocolate Sundae... Your choice of flavors (Buttercrunch was mine) topped with a very sweet Milk Chocolate topping and marshmellow, nuts and Cherry. It was great also !!

Anyone visiting a Grauters Ice Cream in the Cincy/Louisville areas...Their Mocha Chip is about the best flavor I can recall in my adult years of eating good ice cream.

When I worked at Carvel on Long Island in the 1960s, we offered a "fruit salad sundae." Pretty good, now extinct (except at my house!) - Rusty

Rusty Wolf, I remember something like a Fruit Salad Sundae called Tutti Frutti which I find no where now, both were very delicious.
