Popeyes Coming to Des Moines

Today's paper tells me we are getting our first Popeye's franchise--should I be excited? I remember thinking highly of their chicken and sides many years ago.

Excited? No, it doesn't warrant that type of emotion. I happen to like Popeyes Chicken, but I won't drive very far out of my way to get it.

Not so much... it is fast food after all. There has to be better chicken somewhere in town.

ha ha ha... Like Shane says, should be far better chicken in town... My brother likes their sides.. I tried it once and was not impressed at all to say the least... You'd be far better off begging FestivalFood to come to town and set up shop! Atleast then you wont be dissapointed!

Thanks for the replies--but two questions--what is FestivalFood? And, I know it's fast food, but, better or worse than KFC, which is the only FF Chicken purveyor in town?

IMHO I think Popeye's will be found to be far superior to the KFC you are relegated to dine on (pieces are from larger chickens too) . It's one of the few FF restaurants I'll frequent. It seems so much depends on the manager and proper training of the staff. I've had Popeye's chicken outstanding at one location in Milwaukee (S. Cesar Chavez Dr. & National) and greasy and almost inedible at others. It is however still FF and I'd bet with a little sleuthing you can find some other great chicken in town.
Some sides are very good too and if Des Moines is like Milwaukee, they will be seasoned in styles not easily found in the Midwest.

I wish we had a Popeye's! Spicy Chicken, Dirty rice...lot's better than KFC. I always used to hit the one in Vallejo on the way back to Oregon. A good 6 hours of munching.

I like Popeyes and Bojangles because of the spicey chicken. None of our local non-chain mom-and-pop places around here serve spicey chicken. So I have to go to a place like Popeyes and Bojangles to get it. I love the dirty rice and the cajun pinto beans too !

I have seen a TV ad that Church's fried chicken now has spicey chicken. Has anyone tried that ?

Popeye's and Lee's are both better than KFC, if you are into fast chicken. It's OK, but nothing to write home about.

Some of the best red beans and rice around is served at Popeye's. Unfortunately, the farther you get from a Popeye's in New Orleans, the lower the quality of the red beans and rice.

Unlike KFC, Popeyes uses full size pieces of chicken. I like their slaw and red beans & rice. Also great biscuits. I couldn't care less if it's a chain or not. It's pretty tasty.

Barney, I hear that here in Des Moines on E14th and Maury, there is a chicken place inside the new gas station,,,,it has been getting excellent reviews too. KFC is ok and I have never had Popeye's but, here in the midwest, nothing is like home cooked fried chicken so, the fast food places can only make it 2nd best.

Leah--thanks for the info--when I get to the southside I'll try your gas station location. I'd add as you know, really good fried chicken can be found at Gino's, Latin King and Barrata's in Des Moines---I sometimes don't want the full, sit down dinner that it comes with!

Popeye's is hit or miss, depending on the location.......
I've had undercooked slimy chicken at the Century Blvd location by LAX, but better elsewhere.......I remember when they first came to NYC years back, and I would go to the location on 34th st....

they even have some airport locations, Atlanta, if I remember correctly, which at least is usually better than most airport type of food.....

Popeye's headquarters, btw is in New Orleans, so they really got hard hit........over 30 locations there, and lots of people out of work, or even worse.....

Popeyes is some pretty good stuff. I absolutely love the spicy chicken strips. 10 piece box of strips and 6 buscuits. Thats 2 good meals right there. Much better than KFC or Churchs.

I stop at Popeyes at the Atlanta airport on two different concourses. Great for breakfast.

Their sides are very good, staff is a little too friendly and the spicy chicken is very good.

I usually just get a chicken and bisquit for breakfast.

I am flying to Minneapolis on Wednesday morning and I will make that one of my stops while in the airport.

I stopped at the Popeye's on the MassPike every time I could...just for the biscuits. Salty butter made it the best biscuit around. (and the chicken wasn't bad)

I love Popeye's. Last year they built one less than a mile from my apartment. It's even on my way home. I will admit their drive thru service stinks. Someday, I am going to drive up to the speaker and say "I have 8 bucks, just give me some food in a box." No matter what I order, I never get the right thing. Usually, I end up way ahead with extra sides or extra spicy strips, but sometimes I get the wrong sides. It's worth it, though, because I love their mac and cheese and collard greens!

I love the fact that the take out places in DC will actually advertise "Popeyes Style" fried chicken on their menu. I don't know how they get away with it, but they do. You'd think Popeyes would have someting to say about it.

Ooh, Popeye's. Unfortunately the only one in Richmond is in a scary part of town--there used to be one a couple of miles from my house but it was shut down, a loss I still mourn. But since I go up and down I-95 every five or six weeks I make a habit of stopping at the Popeye's in Stafford, VA on my way home to get in my monthly dose of fat, grease, salt, starch and sugar, otherwise known as a 2-piece meal with fries (batter-dipped, which I'm a sucker for), slaw, a biscuit and a big Mr. Pibb. And then I go to the gym.

The only Popeyes I see in DC look really run down, i.e. the one on H Street & 11th NW, and another one on Benning Road and the one on H Street NE. So, I have yet to try the actual Popeyes fried chicken, but I have had some Popeye "style" chicken strips from one of those take out places I mentioned above.

We have 3 in Wichita and they are all in bad neighborhoods. I used to live a block from one when I was in college that was in an awful neighborhood. The Church's chicken across the street has bulletproof glass you have to order through. The one I live by now, is also not in the best neighborhood. It is by a couple of kind of scary bars, so at any time of the day drunks stumble in. It's great entertainment.

I actually stopped there yesterday and got the correct order. I thought I would pass out!

Their use to be a Popeye's on "L" street in Omaha, don't know if it is still there or not.

Love their chicken & onion rings!

I agree with those who say it depends on location. Years ago I used to work near the one on 42nd street in NY city and it was great. Lots of turnover on the food and on-the-ball servers. We have one in my town in NJ that I've been to exactly once and it was awful ---Ken

I went to college in New Orleans in the early 70's an used to frequent what may have been the original NO Popeye's franchise at Washington and Broad St.. 4 pieces, spicy, with dirty rice was the best. It was so spicy, it would make your head sweat. Delicious. It was in a college student's budget. New Orleans was, and still is, a great place to eat, but back then when we would go to the French Quarter, there was usually no money left for food after we had drinks.:-) We pretty much lived off Camellia Grill, Bud's Broiler, po-boys at Domilese's and Acey's Pool Hall AND Popeye's. My metabolism was higher in those days.
We live in FL now and have noticed that Popeye's has toned down the spicy. Too bad. I miss the head sweats. I still think it is better than all of the other Fried chicken chains and usually stop in at least once a month. I also miss the chicken tacos.
As I have grown older I have found a new benefit for eating Popeye's Fried Chicken. It is the MOST delicious remedy for constipation. Several pieces at dinner will have clean as a whistle by the following morning. Works for me, but I don't see it as becoming a major selling point.

First experienced Popeyes when I was living and working in North Philly, and the staff's lack of training and transience made it a pretty poor meal.
However, the ones in Maryland really do a fine job with both chicken and sides..especially the dirty rice

I have to admit that I love Popeye's chicken. It is far better than KFC in my opinion. I just miss the Bojangles that we used to have in Kentucky about 4 years ago. I used to travel 2 hours just to eat there. I don't know, it just seemed to be the best chicken that I have ever had.
