Poppy Seed Buns Sat, 11/17/07 11:28 PM (permalink)
A law enforcement buddy of mine told me that he was warned off of eating my poppy seed buns because of false positives on drug test. Working for the Feds, even a false positive could wreck his career.

First, I thought that was an urban myth, but the Feds seem to take it seriously. But I have nothing to back that up. I am about to Google it for more info, but anyone else have agood trusty resource on this topic?

Second, if its not a myth, what is a good substitute for a Chicago Style Dog. Many of my friends are law enforcement and I am counting on them as regulars.

Though possible, watching wayyyy to much Seinfeld.. Actually there's tons of over the counter items that will trigger false positives..

I found this and thought it very good.

I'm sorry I missed the beginning of this thread, but wanted to add my .02, in some small, single-poppyseed sort of way: In the criminal justice and substance abuse field, where I work, the old poppyseed muffin/I only inhaled it/I had some pancake syrup/I had Nyquil excuses just don't cut it any longer. The calibration of the test, plus the particular assays used, pretty much guarantee against positives caused by all but a bucketful of poppyseeds/cough syrup, etc. Not that some labs aren't lackadasical. We, too, have sent "test" urines to labs to keep 'em on their toes. But now with the feds interested in urinalysis for a variety of reasons (airlines, trains, federal offenses, etc) the system of chain of custody and mandatory retesting of positives pretty much insures that you won't be doing hard time for a hard roll.

Also, if the testee observes common sense and avoids potentially "dangerous" foods, the test should be accurate. I believe that the law now requires notification beforehand of any testing except in criminal justice/substance abuse treatment cases, OR in cases where the employer has ample reason to believe the employee is under the influence. I'm not taking a position on the violation of privacy involved; I'm just saying that the technology has advanced to a point (scary indeed) where they know where you've been, and watcha been eating.

I use the poppyseed buns and it has never been an issue brought to me, but I keep a few bags of regular buns around. Some people prefer them because of the clean teeth issue.

I am still finding it tough to beleive that there may be some truth to it. I'll err on the side of caution and look for a non-poppy sub for those instances. Any recomendatoins? Regular buns do not seem substantial enough to handle a fully loaded Chicago.

Probably some of the Feds and Active Military folks, police may jump on this one. My wife got out 2006 and at that time her base warned of using herbal teas or any type of herbal readies. There posting were if it wasn't prescribed by the base physician, *even off the shelf meds* and it shows, your gone! Basically if it isn't off the shelf in a grocery store the going thought was don't mess with it, if you pop positive, your gone. Anybody in a high security field just won't take the chance of rumor mills and I can understand any Fed or Military staying clear. There are millions of compounds and many like the herbal field aren't in a lab register. Poppy seed are from the opioid hybrid, so who is going to put their career on the line to find out if that lab being used will separate the seeds from the drugs? RJF
