I grew up in that area and can tell you there probably won't be much in Rock Rapids, althoough you never know, look at St. Olaf for example.

Heading into Sioux Falls, SD will be worth your time for good eats, or heading east, it's a straight shot to the "Iowa Great Lakes," where restaurants abound, although many may be closed since the area is a mostly summer vacation destination.

Be on the lookout for Broasted Chicken and, of course Breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwiches. The steaks and pork chops in this area should also be top notch. Don't be afaid to ask the locals where the best steak house is. EVERYONE knows up in that part of the state where to get good meat. For example, if you are in Spencer for whatever reason, go to Cindy's Steak House, (south side of town on 71, just across from the Wal-mart.)

It just occurred to me that my porktenderloinsandwich.com website will be exactly one year old January 16 and I am tantalizingly close to 10,000 hits. I had no thought about that when I put it up simply because I bought the Apple Mac iLife '06 software package and found out I could create a website and have it up in less than one hour on the internet. Who woulda thunk it? Pork tenderloin sandwiches of all things. When I started it I didn't even have a simple, memorable and recognizable url address so I plunked down $20 to make it easier with porktenderloinsandwich.com.

This pursuit has been kind of fun. It has gotten me to some of the most interesting places from a 100 year old restaurant in Huntington, IN, a gas station in Gnaw Bone, IN, a tiny berg hidden in a valley off a county road in St. Olaf, IA, an ethnic restaurant in South Chicago and a BBQ place you would normally be afraid to venture into in Houston if you were from out of town and unfamiliar with the neighborhood. But the power of the breaded pork tenderloin sandwich lures you. I am sure desertdog can attest to that. It gets you off the freeway on your travels. The emails have been fantastic. I am making wives all over the USA happy they can satisfy their husbands from the Midwest with the gastronomical delight while living in Florida, California or Washington DC.

As I type I just checked and I will make 10,000 hits probably before dinner today on www.porktenderloinsandwich.com. Only 8 away. Oops correct that only 5 away now as I am composing. What happened is the Minneapolis Star-Tribune published an encore of my website because I wrote and thanked the Websearch columnist and he printed an excerpt. It can be found at...

Other news. I added another blog report today on tenderizers. I've used three different kind so far. Two are not conventional.

If this message was to me, I won't be anywhere near Cedar Rapids. Do you know of any place close to Rock Rapids? We're flying into Omaha and driving up to Rock Rapids going thru Sioux City.

Your best bet might be to make a short detour to the Dairy Sweet in Dunlap, IA on US 30 about 40 miles NNE of Omaha. Its breaded pork tenderloin was the 2005 Iowa Pork Board winning sandwich. It would probably add about 23 miles to your total trip if you cut back to I-29 via Hwy 37 out of Dunlap. If the Pork Board judges are any good you should at least be getting one of the best in Iowa that way.

I second Iowa Cafe Gal's recommendation of the Starlight Room in Cedar Rapids. Their tenderloins are excellent. Only warning is it's a tavern and can be smokey.

I read the link but thanx for the heads up. I'll be going up there frequently so I'll catch them later in the year. We have a sister company in Rock Rapids, Alpha Omega Publications, that produces Christian based Computer Curriculums for Christian Schools and Home Schoolers. I know most places up there close this time of the year because they're all down here in AZ. Sucking up the sunshine, Spring training, golf and chasing chicks at the Bingo games at the trailer parks!!! The East Valley of the Phoenix has more Iowanians from Dec to March than Grand Rapids. That's why we have the Iowa Cafe and the Midwestern Meat Market( famous for his Iowa Pork Chops and Pork Tenderloins) plus others.

In your travels (especially Iowa), have you ever come across a BPT that was instead called a "skinny"? There a recipe in the new Cook's Country and that's what they say the Iowans call it. The recipe doesn't call for a buttermilk soak and the crumb mixture is a combo of bread/saltines, but otherwise it sure sounds like the BPT. -pb

This is the first time I have heard of it as the Iowa Skinny. Sounds like they beat it thin, fry it and it becomes kind of crispy. The Joensy BPT I had was kind of like that. Here is the recipe from Cook's Country...

An Iowa skinny is a fried pork sandwich that’s as good as it is simple to make—it starts with a pork tenderloin that is pounded thin, lightly breaded and fried. A skinny is traditional served on a soft bun with lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. But while nearly every recipe for this regional favorite agrees on the meat (pork tenderloin) and the method (pounded extra-thin and shallow fried), there is little agreement regarding the best way to achieve the requisite golden brown, crunchy coating. Here’s how we did it:

For the coating, we settled on a mixture of flour, egg, and both breadcrumbs and Saltine cracker crumbs. -

I went down to Dallas, TX and sampled a breaded pork tenderloin sandwich at the Lakewood Landing, an "upscale dive" in northeast Dallas. It was a true midwest type sandwich. It is already up on my Pork Tenderloin Sandwich Blog site and here is the bar's website...

Enough with the pizza porn. Yes, I do other things as well. Check out that thread on Roadfood.com.

Last night we went to Grumpy's Bar in downtown Minneapolis. I'd never been there even though I work downtown because it would be about a 2 mile hike from my office. We planned to get there at 5:30 PM thinking that is how you beat the dinner crowd. The streets were jammed and there was a guy with a flag waving us to a parking lot with a $15 sign. I asked what was up and he said are you here for the Monster Trucks? No, we just want to go to Grumpy's. He then said we would be better off parking on the street at the meter (right in front of us and the last one). Grumpy's is in the shadows of the Metrodome where the Vikings and Twins play.

When we got to the bar the place was packed. It was fathers and preteen sons all over. They were having dinner before going to what else, Monster Trucks!!! That's what fathers and sons do. Minneapolis is a non-smoking city and bars are now kind of kid friendly because the price of bar food is just right.

Every table was taken. This is not a place where a hostess seats you. You just find an opening. We decided to sit right at the bar at two empty stools, a big rectangular bar in the center of the space. Two bartender ladies were manning the bar. I never saw two bartenders work so hard. They were going at top speed to get the drinks out. Fortunately for us (me and the Mrs.) we were in no hurry. We relaxed and watched the bartendering show along with a Gopher/Denver college hockey game on the TV. When they took our orders they said it would probably take 1-1/2 hours because of the unusual rush. No problem for us. We drove 25 miles one way for this tenderloin.

The pork tenderloin sandwiches actually came to us within one hour of ordering so all was well. The sandwiches were very good. When I started this pursuit I did not think breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches were all that common in Minnesota yet here we were eating the 19th Minnesota tenderloin just two miles from my office. But then again most of the places we sampled we probably would have never ventured into had it not been for the pursuit.

The beer in the picture is a pint of Surly Brewing Co. Bender. Surly is a fairly new micro brewery in the Twin Cities. That was my first and it was very good. The Mrs. had Summit Ale the staple tap brew of the Twin Cities.

Let's see, hmm, 4 miles round trip walk, approximately 500 calories, I could almost zero out my lunch. Dang! too much time.

Hey Davydd,

Looks like you are enjoying your trip! When you get back how about some help developing Pork Tenderloin Sliders for the big game. Should be pretty straight forward, right? I'm thinkin of slicing the loin thinner than normal, no pounding, then using your marinade process on the little guys, bread em, fry em, put em on small potato buns with choice of condiments.

I had been thinking about that for a couple of reasons. First, that is exactly what I did for my 3-1/2 year old granddaughter when I made the Holiday tenderloins. I used a small heat and serve dinner roll not more than 2 inches in diameter.

Secondly, a new restaurant in our neighborhood that opened last month, Jake O'Connor's Irish Pub, serves appetizers of beef tenderloin sliced thin on little tiny buns five on the plate - finger food. I was thinking at the time they ought to do that with mini breaded pork tenderloins.

Yeah it would be a good idea. I'm thinking 1/4" slices across and a quick pounding to not more than 3" in diameter with buns smaller than White Castle burgers so the tenderloin sticks out.

David, I sometimes do the tiny tenderloins and use a dinner roll for the bun . I have done it two ways,cut the meat before breading and after breading. Before breading looks better, the edges dry out if you do it after. They are great for parties. I use them in my catering biz... Jean Anne

I think I will try it before breading. I already made one as I mentioned kind of accidentally with a left over end of the tenderloin. Now I would like to make a lot of them and see how many I can get out of one tenderloin. I'm guess about a dozen to 1-1/2 dozen.

I made my first trip to IA & NB this week on Mon-Tues with the intent of getting a BPT. Had a Iowa Pork Chop and Home Fries at Tofers in Sioux Station, IA. Outstanding! Could not get a BPT until We got back to the airport in Omaha NB. It was at The Hanger restaurant in the airport, Nothing to write home about. Very Generic. Looking forward to my next trip to get a real BPT in upstate Rock Rapids IA.

I am having my pre Super Bowl party tomorrow. We have invited a few people over to chow down on the food. I just finished shopping for all the ingredients. Stay tuned tomorrow night for the results.

Last night we went to St. Albans Boathouse on Lake Minnetonka for dinner. No pork tenderloin sandwich. The special was stuffed pork tenderloin so we tried that. The stuffing was, to the best of my tasting knowledge, a raisen, currant, pecan mix and butterscotch flavored sauce. It was very good.

Amazing what a stack of mini tenderloins started

I am having fun with this schtick. Today the Spokane Spokesman-Review ran a long article on the breaded pork tenderloin sandwich. The reporter got most all her information off my website. After striking out everywhere she googled my site.

A Seattle radio program guy wants to educate Seattle about the pork tenderloin sandwich after visiting my website. He said something about wanting to interview me. That's scary. I'd probably get dyslexic and have a brain fart.

Next week I will be taking a suburban weekly newspaper reporter to my favorite downtown Minneapolis pub for lunch to have a breaded pork tenderloin sandwich for photo op in a feature article.

It is getting the pork tenderloin sandwich a lot of publicity.
