Port-a-Potty

I recently opened a concession trailer selling hot dogs etc on my own property. Had our first health inspection today and had 0 demerits-Perfect Score-However because I had rented a port-o-potty and had it available to customers as well as people working in the trailer was told it had to go. Turns out I am not required to have anything available but anything that is available has to have hot water available. I am fortunate in having a B&M restaurant right across the road from me which I am friends with so any employees can go there. Guess I am in the market for a small portable building to utilize as a toilet now.

Man this thread scared me... Saw the topic on the homepage here and thought someone was about to convert a porta john into a hot dog stand... But if you own the property, why not just build your own small building with a john, sink, and with you being in Texas, possibly a solar heated hot water system?

What I was getting at is I am not REQUIRED to have anything. Was only trying to have something available and as it was explained to me the Health Dept would rather have nor require anything vs a port a potty

You recently opened. I'm sure you would find somewhere to go would increase your business more than enough to pay for it. Especially return visits, when they know they can kill two birds with one stone. If not some will keep going or visit your friend across the road instead.

Texas does not require restroom for employees? If I have any employees, have to have restroom within 50 feet. Also if I want to provide any seating, I have to have restroom. No blue rooms...

We are in Corpus Christi. We have to have a bathroom that we & our customers can use within 300 ft of our location. We also have to produce a notarized statement giving us permission. We finally passed inspection today and started looking for a place to vend at. So many folks do not want to put their signature on anything. Working on it though.

i'm not required to have a bathroom and i'm very efficient in my bladder management practices. i did have a customer step into the adjacent woods last summer. lol the funny part was that he asked my permission first. i said "go for it." lol

Hey Wag,You selling Hot dogs, not a 7 course sit down French Dinner. Put a lid on the Porta Potty. Its hard enough to be in compliance, don't add anything you don't have too..............Billyb

Thanks Billy, I guess what got me was I had the same inspector come out and look at the trailer a good 6 months before we opened. Had to put some screen on the serving window which no one else has but whatever makes them happy. Told her at that time we intended to have a port a potty available and was told that was good enough. Have a dedicated handwashing sink in trailer. On first inspection was told to get it off the property. No demerits on normal inspection which I am proud of. I am 100% legal without anything due to other businesses in the area. However am now pricing a 6X6 portable building with all the needed fixtures inside. Will have a 4' door so maybe I can claim Handicapped Accessable. Have all utilities available and my own backhoe so not that big of a deal. Outside city limits so I can do everything myself and no permits required. Guess it is at least partially my fault but wish I had knew about it while I was installing all the utilities to the trailer. Covered everything with crushed rock which I will have to get more of once I dig everything up again. Live and learn but I am still determined to sell the best hot dogs in town. Just wait till I start my Friday Po Boy specials.

Was thinking of doing a catfish and a shrimp po boy special on Friday's. Po Boys was my original idea of a theme before I got to following Roadfood and switched to Hot Dogs. My wife is German so had to have Bratwurst so it fit in better. My biggest problem is I already need a bigger trailer and more storage space. My hat goes off to people that do events and have to take their inventory with them. Just another reason to open a hot dog stand in the middle of winter. Lots of learning curves.

Wag, Great Idea on Catfish and shrimp po boys, I hope they work out well. Did you ever think about putting up a portable building on your everyday site ??? No foundation, no permit, you got the back hoe................ how often do you get your wife over to hill country for some German food and good sausage ????? Billyb

I have certainly thought of a portable building outfitted to cook in. Would include a drive thru window. But need to get some return on my original investment first. We have only been married for 2 years and I have been working overseas until recently. We have tried on several occasions to get to Fredricksburg but something else always happens. Just looked at the calender and it appears Valentine's Day is on a Sunday. May need a long weekend about that time.
