Portable self contained sink plans? Mon, 12/11/06 11:32 PM (permalink)
Does anyone know where I can get some DIY plans to build a Portable sink setup? I will need to have a 3 bay and handwash sink in order to meet codes and the place I am looking to lease does not have any Water, but plenty of electricity. I've seen a bunch of places where they will sell you the setup but I would think I can build it myself for alot less, just need to have some plans.

Thanks,

-Bob

I'd be very careful before doing any of that.
Your health department may not allow that solution. You need to really pick their brains about exactly what equipment will be required ... and it's not just the health dept ... your local building department must be consulted too.
You might read my post on the following thread about the health department ...

      Good luck!

Make sure to look into requirements for disposal of waste water. Is there a septic system on the site? Even if you bring in fresh water for your sinks... if your health department is anything like mine, they want to see that the waste water disposed of through a septic system, not just poured out back on the ground. "Eagle" makes some nice sinks. I got sinks in both my trailers from Eagle, they're nice. Check out www.eaglegrp.com. (800) 441-8440. Also, if you go to ebay and type in "concession trailers" there will almost certainly be some portable sink setups for sale in that list. For a water heater you may want to get an Ariston. I have a 2.5 gallon water heater in each trailer... this is the smallest water heater you will find. They do make larger models though if you have the space. Make sure, if your unit will not be heated in the winter, to install the water heater with flexible tubing rather than rigid piping so it can be removed and drained easily before it freezes. The Ariston's do NOT have drain valves on them.

Cowboy Bob showed me a neat trick on a Handwash Station. Take a 5 or 7.5 gallon Igloo style Water container with a spigot at the bottom (available at WallyWorld cheap). These are like the ones you see in Sporting Events, namely sponsored by Gatorade. Fill it with hot water before you head out, set it at the edge of a table and have an empty 5 gallon bucket underneath it. Not the prettiest site, but hey, it's cheap and seems to work!

As for the 3 bay, idea I have is take a used Stainless Steel table (3 or 4 footer), with a lower shelf. Have a machinest cut in a slot to drop in 3 mini bar sinks. On the bottom shelf, you have a 7.5 gallon PVC bladder for fresh water, small RV style heater for your hot water (electric or LP), and a 10 gallon bladder for waste water. Use flexible tubing so when your done, you just pull out the hoses, and put the caps on the bladders and take them home to refill, sanitize and dispose. Mount the table on casters, and use a small curtin to hide the guts and make it look nice.

You'd have to run this by the Health Dept. in your area, but seems like an idea that would work.

be careful doing any work before you contact licensing people.
in calif. the cods are really tight and i am learning from experience that what you are trying to do MAY not be acceptable.
            read the regulations VERY carefully
ps.is this for a cart or a trailer? because in calif. the cods is VERY specific about the sinks.

check the lil orbits website, they offer portable complete sink set ups that are way too expensive but they show a lot of pictures and diagrams that would make it easy to copy and be universally HD compliant.

                      Hello Roadfood
I have been reading fer years and now I just have to open my mouth.

HD is not god, you can when, I did

Little State law that states, mobiles must move every 10 days, for 2days, then can move back.
"I ticked someone off", I'm good at that.
I am a transplant patient and I just could not do that  with a 10k# trailer.
They picked on me at the wrong time, HD budget time. Long story short.
I had a representative write the "Roadkill Bill". HD did NOT want this to go through.
Last day of the legislative session, I received a call from the HD Commissioner himself.
Asked would I pull my dogs off, if they gave me a variance. I said yes, "when you put it in writing".
Received an email 15 minutes later, Called state rep(in session), and the HD got there 2 year funding
2 hours before the legislation session ended for the year.
                      Everyone was happy.

Now for the reply to the sinks. I am approved in 3 states
Get approved SS table, any length
Have the top cut and have holes cut into 4-1/3 pans or 1/2 pans NEW
Put it all together and make sure it's sealed, if it leaks around the edges, they can write u up
I use a SS pony Keg, with a heating element, for my heater
And I used Coroplast to cover the 3 sides
Their main question on sinks is what will you do with your waste.
Me, I had a dump plumbed into my sewer, so I have my own dump station for this and my RV

                      Best-O-Luck
                      Jerry
