Portion size... do you ever feel "guilty"? Sat, 01/23/10 12:22 AM (permalink)
I understand why such HUGE portions are frequently served. You make a lot more money on a $10 salad than you do a $3 salad, which is what people probably would order a lot more if it was available.

The wife and I went out to dinner again tonight. She ordered a salad and an app. The salad was $12, and could have EASILY been enough for 4 - 5 people if served as an app.  Or even 2+ people as a meal. I know that it was bigger than the 2 of us could eat at one sitting.

We eat out often. My wife and I both are overweight. I'm not really blaming the restaurants, because SURELY the decision on how much to eat lies solely with us, but do you ever consider the public's health when making these GIGANTIC portions?

As I consider my menu, I am considering offering a fair amount of items in a small and large size.

As a man who had a 6Tuple Bypass in 2007, at the age of 45, I feel like I owe it to my customers and my conscience.

Alot of restaurants for years have served family style portions. If I see a Salad over $4.95, I inquire as to size.
I know a few Italian places do this and stated on their menu. I remember in the 60's an Ice cream shop in Colo.Springs had a sundae to feed a family. Spent a few good times there.

Sorry but your correct your problems are your problems and it doesn't matter if it is genetics or your own self abuse.

Is the restaurant taking advantage, "HELL YES" but you don't have to be sucked in by it.

No one at your favorite dining spot forces you to eat everything on your plate. The kids in China are not starving, and if they were it wouldn't help them if you ate everything that is put in front of you.

Again not directed at you but come on folks it's time people in this country took some responsibility for their actions instead of trying to blame all their problems on someone else.

PS Do you think you should get to outlaw smoking just because it is bad for "MY HEALTH"? If you do what's next? Will you make an effort into peeking into my bedroom to watch for unprotected sex?

Your job is to take care of YOU and YOUR Family, not me.

My large Ice Cream cone is a pound. I actually make more money off smaller sizes. It's there because people want it.
Even though I don't think anyone needs to eat a pound of ice cream at one sitting it's not my call.

When the portions size are large, i leave some to bring home and make a second meal out of it. There is no reason to finish the food on your plate if the portion size is large. People are overweight regardless if they eat out or not. It depends on your choices. Yes, i know there are medical conditions, and special circumstances, etc., but overall, it's about choice.

I have a theory and that's all it is a theory.

If food is properly spiced it takes less quantity to start the digestive juices and you get that full feeling faster.

Think about going to a 4 star restaurant and how small the portions are. Yet after eating those smaller  portions you feel satisfied. In fact more satisfied than when you go to a fast food joint and wolf down to giant burgers and fries.

Fast food has so much filler in it, and little or no spice except salt that it doesn't tell your system that your getting full and so people tend to over eat.

And again that's just my theory and I have no training, or education in this area what so ever, so I could be totally wrong.

PS Speaking of good food the Pump Room in Chicago (opened in 1938) just closed and I have had some of my favorite meals there. The service was always amazing.

Jack, I read your response to the congregation in church today, and everyone was extremely disappointed in your unprotected sex. I did have a few requests for a larger peep hole. looks like a few people wanted to witness this insanity. Can you leave some left over BBQ and pork rinds outside the window, it could be a new twist on the Drive-in theater????????????????  Billyb

I think we should outlaw smoking because it is bad for EVERYBODY's health, but I'll stop there.  And let's be real, LOTS of food is terrible when not eaten fresh.

I don't think I ever went to a restaurant that didn't have a side salad. Use Cheesecake factory as a good example of large portions. When my wife and I go there, we know this, and share a Caesar salad, and one entree. It's up to you to control your diet, appetite, health, and how much fat you eat. If the portions are big in other restaurants. I recommend to my wife to have a small salad, split a appetizer she picks out, and a entree i pick out, or vise versa. Just because the restaurant offers it one way, doesn't mean you can't have it your way. ...Billyb
