Portuguese in Newark, NJ? Fri, 07/16/04 5:19 PM (permalink)
I'll be in Newark this weekend for a conference at UMDNJ medical center. Was in Newark a few weeks ago and happened to catch the Portuguese day parade in Ironbound- I vowed I would return for a Portuguese meal. Where should I go? I'm specifically interested in Portuguese rather than Spanish or Brazilian. Thanks.

the Ironbound section of Newark (the railroad tracks describe the area)-is beautiful. Cross the tracks from Newark into Ironbound and you see the difference at once----the place is spotless. Two houses with a railroad track inbetween-- one is in squalar the other beautiul. Need I say more. Any restaurant is great. I am Irish, but it comes to fish cooking I tip my hat to the Porchies. Love their food and have been to Ironbound a number of wonderful times.

I work several days a week in Newark.
The cleanest restaurant with the best service is Forno's. I recommend it. Perhaps the most authentic menu is Tony DaCaneca. For Basque food, Casa Vasca is terrific, too.

The Rodizio is a tougher choice. Seabra's has a huge menu and great parking. It is located across the street from the Performing Arts Center, on Route 21. Don Pepe's, down the street, is reliable for huge steaks and lobster. It isn't as refined as some of the other places, but will fill the bill.

If you're in need of a lunch down the street from UMDNJ, go to Hobby's Deli on Branford Place and Halsey Street. A venerable old Jewish Deli with great sandwiches, a relic of old Newark---one of the few left. A short walk down the hill from UMDNJ and the Courthouse.

Have fun. And don't forget the Springsteen exhibit at the Newark Museum!

Thanks for the reccomendations everyone. I ended up on Ferry street and ate at a nice 24 hour Brazilian diner- it was called Blue-something, or maybe just Blue. Had some short ribs, grilled beef and onions, and some beans and rice. Best $7 meal I've had in a long time. Wish I knew about the Springsteen exhibit before I went!

POUNDPOND got it right, just about.....Casa Vasca is one of the better restaurants in the world!!!!!!! go back and try their clams in green sauce, also same dish made with whiting. Forno's was always a bit higher in price and somewhat less 'authentic'(like I really know what that means) but good non-the-less. almost all of the smaller restaurants are winners.

Hi . I grew up outside of Newark and live in San Diego now.We just got back from a trip back east and my wife will not allow me to visit the east coast without taking her to the Ironbound district and feasting on Shrimp in Garlic sauce and Paella. She is hooked!!

One of our favorite places is Madrid Lisbon. It is very small and simple but the food is great. The main part of the restaurant is really a neighborhood bar, where many of the locals order their food and eat there. The food is very reasonably priced. Only negative is parking is difficult
