Pound Cake Dessert Sun, 11/13/05 1:33 PM (permalink)
Is anyone familiar with a recipe that is made with pound cake, jello and sour cream?

Someone was telling me a few days ago about a recipe that their mother had made years ago for them as a child that was nothing more than a pound cake placed in a loaf pan with jello and sour cream added to it and chilled. But he has no clue as to how it was made.

I tried searching google for this particular recipe but nothing is coming up that even sounds close to it. Did anyone ever make this or their mothers may have made it for them? Or even know someone who does make it?

It sounds interesting and I would like to try it but I cannot see how you could possibly add the ingredients to come up with anything edible.

Thanks

I don't know the exact recipe you are speaking of, but my guess would be it is similar to a dessert that was made back in the 1970s where you make your Jell-O using the speed-set method (which is just adding ice cubes in place of the cold water), then after the Jell-O chilled for a bit but before it "set up," you added your sour cream and whipped it with a mixer. Slice your pound cake into 2 (or 3) layers, and layer the Jell-O/sour cream mixture in between the pound cake layers and chill. You can then remove the cake from the loaf pan and frost with Cool Whip if you like.

Now my memory on this one is rusty, but that's the best I can remember.

Oh, and seems like the one I am remembering used angel food cake instead of pound cake, but his mom may have simply preferred the richer taste of pound cake (a lot of recipes that use these cakes as a base can be either pound cake or angel food depending on how light or how rich you want your dessert to be). Hope that helps.

Oh, and I also think you could split your cake into as many layers as you like depending on how thick you want your layers of cake and Jell-O/sour cream mixture to be. Even splitting the cake into 4 layers sounds pretty. And I bet you could add fruit if you wanted to.

I know of a sour cream pound cake made into a "POKE CAKE" where after you make the cake, you poke holes into in while it is still in the pan warm and pour warm jello over it, let it cool, refrigerate. When you cut it, you see the lines of jello in the cake.

Not at all what you are looking for but:
Good thick slice of poundcake slathered with an orange or lemon sauce.
the sauce is simple: butter, corn starch, lemon or orange juice, cooked to thicken and pour over the cake. Simple and delicious.

        cheers, John

John---try that with crushed pinapple in natural juice !!!its even better if you strain some of the pinapple and brown that in butter---caramelized it---and then add the rest with the juice and thicken! toss a glop of thick whipped cream on top-- with am Irish coffee its wonderful!---AND---you can pull it all out of the freezer/fridge and cabinets and serve it 10 mins!

Thanks for the help gang, I am playing around with it and trying different things. The combination tastes pretty good...even if it isn't what it is supposed to be.
