Pretzel Sandwiches Wed, 09/27/06 1:34 PM (permalink)
Looking at the Snacks section here, thread of Favorite Prtezels, I was thinking about a sandwich that is vey popular in Gewmany, especially at snack bars. They take a large soft pretzel (a bit more delicious than in US and with a slighty different shape - the bottom part is thinner, sort of like a handle), slice it in half like a roll or bread, and put in filling. Usually a lettuce leaf, tomato slice, sliced eggs, meat or cheese. Mustard or mayonnaise also. Handy and good.

Has anyone sighted these in the US of A?

I've seen these at Oktoberfests and other german/bavarian festivals. Usually as a ham sandwich.
I"ve also had a pretzel sandwich where the pretzel dough was straight (not twisted), and you could get sausage or kielbasa.

Servatti's Pastry Shop in Cincinnati serves a large Bavarian style pretzel {about the size of a sheet cake}, and they will make sandwiches to order on the pretzels. I have had them at a couple of parties, and they are excellent!! Much better than any old giant sub sandwich.

The Howard House Tavern in Elkton, MD does a crab filled pretzel. Haven't had it yet, but it is highly recommended.

Interesting sandwich but this is not available in Knoxville, TN. But there is a lot that is not available here.

I think sandwiches on pretzels (or pretzel bread) is an idea who's time has come. They're absolutely wonderful. For a brief time, there was a brew-pub on 42nd and 7th in NY that served these. It was the only reason (besides the theaters) that I every had to enter that area. Unfortunately, that building was torn down during the Disney-fication of Times Square.

I realize it's a no-no to mention a chain in this thread but in this case I thought it might be appropriate.

Bennigan's has a Turkey O'Toole sandwich made on a pretzel roll. I had it a few years ago. It was actually pretty good being it was Bennigan's. Click the link below for a picture.

I've got some little frozen stubby pretzles filled with cheese that you put in the nukrawave. They don't taste very good and are really bad for you, but I better finish them off, waste not want not and all of that.

We ate at Goose Island on Clark in Wrigleyville after a Cubs game last month - I had the Paulina Market Brat, with onions and white Wisconsin cheddar and German mustard on a fresh baked pretzel roll. Utterly delicious and highly recommended.

yes! it's good stuff. Lot's of Bay area places have them. We went to a crab shack on the Potomac and had the crab pretzels as an appetizer. They're sinfully delicous.

Someone brought up the old Sheetz thread, which reminded me that Sheetz (an all in one stop when you're on the road) sells sandwiches with the option to get a pretzel as your roll.
It's good if you unwrap it immediately, but if it stays in the aluminum foil to long, it gets soggy...but then that's true for almost all hot sandwiches on any bread.

Is it a soft pretzel filled with a cheesy crab meat filling and then pan fried like The Howard House?

soft pretzel stuffed with crab cheese mixture. It may have been baked in a skillet rather than pan fried.

Trader Joes grocery stores have close to authentic Bavarian Pretzels. Just pop in the oven for a few and voila! tasty snack.

in Germany, esp. in Bavaria thy take pretzels, slice them open and put butter inside. A very popular breakfast item found in most Bakerys there.

Ed Levine has an amazing (to me) post on soft pretzels and soft pretzel sandwiches today from:
                                          Sigmund Pretzel Shop
                                          Address: 29 Avenue B, New York, NY 10009 (b/n 2nd and 3rd; map)

                                          Website: http://www.sigmundnyc.com
                                          http://newyork.seriouseat...ity-manhattan-new.html

The pretzel sandwiches ($7) are a fine idea. Made to order on a split soft pretzel, they have the right ratio of pretzel to filling. The fresh roasted turkey with gouda and apple was just about a perfect sandwich, and the Norwegian smoked salmon with dill cream cheese and cucumber was pretty swell as well. Tomato, mozzarella, and pesto will satisfy the tomato, mozzarella, and pesto freaks that seem to be everywhere, and the roast beef needed more juicy roast beef to make it work.

Jungle Jim's in Fairfield OH at one time had a non profit operation selling pretzels and pretzel sandwiches to benefit Iraq veterans but it is no longer - I cannot remember its name nor find something about it online though.

The Pretzel Shop on Pittsburgh's South Side has served me several very good pretzel sandwiches.

However, this topic provokes me to rant about one of the most fundamentally misconceived meals I've ever eaten:

More than a decade ago, a Loew's movie theater opened near us with a restaurant inside. We ate there once when we were running late for a movie, because it would be so convenient to eat at a nice restaurant inside the theater that it was worthwhile to experiment with that restaurant.

I ordered a pulled pork barbecue sandwich served on a pretzel roll. It wouldn't be authentic, of course, but it might still be tasty.

Perhaps the fundamental flaw of this sandwich is clear to you already. I no longer remember whether I thought of that problem before ordering; if I did think of it, I assumed that such an easily circumvented problem would be avoided as a matter of course.

It was not until I was served that the misbegotten nature of this sandwich became apparent.
Here's the problem: pulled pork is sloppy, and yet the pretzel roll it was served on had large holes. So when I lifted the sandwich, most of the filling fell through to the plate or my hands. And the restaurant didn't provide silverware until I asked.

I have seen in the past year that the pulled pork sandwich on a pretzel roll is still on the Loews menu.
Perhaps no one else has had an issue with the sandwich. Perhaps they have changed the sandwich to use a pretzel roll without large holes. Or perhaps they are relying on the fact that most of their patrons are eating in the dark.

ralphmelton that's too funny. I can see that all talking place...a sad meal indeed. Maybe they serve it with fork and knife now.

I've never actually had a pretzel sandwich but I'll be darned if those don't look truly amazing.

Ed Levine has an amazing (to me) post on soft pretzels and soft pretzel sandwiches today from:

The pretzel sandwiches ($7) are a fine idea. Made to order on a split soft pretzel, they have the right ratio of pretzel to filling. The fresh roasted turkey with gouda and apple was just about a perfect sandwich, and the Norwegian smoked salmon with dill cream cheese and cucumber was pretty swell as well. Tomato, mozzarella, and pesto will satisfy the tomato, mozzarella, and pesto freaks that seem to be everywhere, and the roast beef needed more juicy roast beef to make it work.
