Proscuitto and Cantelope
Sat, 04/2/11 8:46 PM
( permalink)
I bought several packages of proscuitto at Benton's hams in Madinsonville the other day. Tonight I am enjoying it with cantelope and some white wine. Salty and sweet sure does go good together especially with a sip of Chablis. I got a few meat balls in the oven with some of my homemade spaghetti. I was glad to see Butler prevail and I hope Kentucky can do the same. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

That is one of those magic combinations that just seem to make no sense at all. Once you've tasted it, however, it's hard to imagine a better match. They seem to be made for each other.

I totally agree about proscuitto & cantelope. However, I have to wait until I can get summertime cantelope. Here in Indiana you can also find what they call musk melons. Not my cup of tea, too soft & mushy. A story about my great grandfather & his watermelon patch. He had a large farm on the Ohio river in West Virgina. Before the Ohio had locks, some parts of the river became shallow in the summer. Grandpa planted large watermelon patches near the riverbank, but in the summertime, guys from Ohio would sneak across & steal the watermelons. Well, every summer Grandpa would take his shotgun down to the watermelon patch & when the Ohio boys would come across, Grandpa would let loose with his shotgun. Not to actually shoot anyone, but close enough to keep them away from the melons for the rest of the summer. If Grandpa were still alive & tried that in 2011, he would problably be arrested.

annpeeples A wonderfully classic combination! Ann, I assume you mean with the Chablis??? I got the proscuitto at Benton's ham which has been visited by many folks with Roadfood. The first time I ever had it was with the Mayor. I was hooked right then. http://bentonscountryhams2.com/ Paul E. smith

Michael Hoffman Not to be an agitator, but I prefer honeydew melon with prosciutto Honey dew is very good also and even watermelon. Prosciutto seems to go well with most melons? Why? I am not sure but I suppose it is the sweet and salty. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

I tried the watermelon combination, and I have to say it was surprisingly good. Paul- a red wine, like a shiraz, goes well with it!

In St. Louis, MO you must try Volpi Italian Salami & Meat Co located in The Hill section of town. They also mail order.

Michael Hoffman Not to be an agitator, but I prefer honeydew melon with prosciutto I agree 100%. I miss my dog a lot, but I really miss him when my mom serves cantaloupe because I used to give him my portion, under the table. I prefer my prosciutto imported, though. JoeRogo, leethebard, are you with me? Claracamille, I would have loved your great grandfather.

I am with Michael Hoffman on this...I have tried nationally produced prosciutto and it just does not compare. Cantaloupe--must be in season, not mushy, but sweet and firm. Honeydew--is pretty nice too, but not overly sweet. I remember when this combo was all the rage at restaurants and banquet halls, not seems to fallen out of trendiness. Not that I ever stopped enjoying it.

Sundancer, Some guys just know how to live! You Imported Ham Snobs, Bentons has received rave reviews on here in several threads. If Sundancer says it's good, that's good enough for me. BUY AMERICAN!!! Diane Sawyer says so!

As an ex-NYer now living in central FL, I was baffled when I never found this item in any of the local Italian joints we now frequent. I started asking the owners why it was missing & the universal response was "We had it on the menu when we opened, but no one ever ordered it." Go figure!
