March 2014 - The Barbecue Center, Lexington
The Barbecue Center shows up on the NC Barbecue Trail and in Our State magazine. The review at the Barbecue Trail link was informative, letting me know to ask for my pork the way I like it.

The Barbecue Center does not offer Brunswick Stew, but they do feature a barbecue soup which we ordered. While not Brunswick Stew, the soup was a nice substitute and very good. We were told that they take vegetable soup and add a handful of pork to it. As you can see, Barbecue Center doesn't skimp on the pork they add to their soup.

Pie Diva and I each ordered a small pork tray, which came with hush puppies and barbecue slaw. The hush puppies were nicely sweet, but cooked darker than what we are used to. They were perfectly acceptable, but not in the league of some of the best we have eaten.

Pie Diva ordered coarsely chopped white meat and bark for her pork tray. She got it exactly as ordered.

I asked for "dark & bark" for my tray. It was perfect. The dark meat was extremely juicy and I could taste the rub that they used on the pork. The barbecue slaw was fantastic with the pork.

We went for pecan pie and Birthday Cake ice cream for dessert. The pie was a disappointment, salty mass produced tasting crust. Pie Diva took one for the team by taking the first bite of the blisteringly hot filling and warning me before I did the same.

In our overall comparison, The Barbecue Center offers some of the best pork we have tried. They are another addition to our Top 3 list of NC BBQ pits.

I was at the Bar-B-Q Center on the 14th.  It was amazing.  Absolutely amazing.  It's in my all-time top 10.  From this thread, I also visited Short Sugar's and the Chapel Hill Allen & Son, both of which were also really good.   Stories about the trip will begin at Marie, Let's Eat! next week.

Does anyone know of another bakery/donut shop like Sandra's in the Chapel Hill area they can recommend? I think it is going to be too far of a drive for me to get out there.

Going back to last Saturday morning, before our stop at the Pittsboro Allen & Son, we had to drive to Sanford for donuts from Sandra's Bakery. I'll add this here for completeness.

Sandra's has really, really good donuts. Someone brings them into work every week and since eating these, I no longer touch the Dunkin's and Krispie Kremes when they show up. I think that makes Sandra's donuts "Healthy Donuts" by lowering my input of other donuts.

This is not the best photo of our half-dozen. That's a caramel donut on top, with really good caramel topping. Under the tissue are two Turtle Donuts that they specially prepared for us.  They added chocolate, caramel and pecans to a cream cheese topped donut for us.  Sandra's belongs in the Roadfood Donut Hall of Fame.

David,

Durham is close to Chapel Hill (in proximity anyway) and had a couple of donut shops recommended in My State Magazine. We've been to Rise Biscuits & Donuts and thought they were good. Monuts is another shop in Durham

I had a truly dreadful experience at Bar-B-Q Center.  So bad, I thought there was no reason to ever return.  That positive reviews have me thinking they were just having a bad day.  Glad to see it was better for you.

I'm surprised. The Bar-B-Q Center was one of my favorites last August.

I just found Sugarland Bakery in CH. I might have to try that.

I really liked Little Richard's when I was just there a few days ago.

October 2013 - Skylight Inn BBQ, Ayden

The Skylight Inn is renowned for their Eastern Carolina barbecue. They made all three of my source lists - Roadfood, NCBS Historic Barbecue Trail, and Our State. This was our second stop of the day and we had great expectations, starting with the understated architecture.

This is how they serve the Pork Platter at Skylight Inn. Decent barbecue, but I marked it down for the poor job of picking out fat and gristle from the mix. I call it Ayden-style. The slaw was unremarkable and the corn slab was pretty nasty, hard with no sweetness and a rancid oil flavor.

Skylight was the consensus #3 pick out of the 4 barbecue stops we made on our trip. Although one member of our group rated Skylight tops.

After just being at the Skylight Inn I have to agree. The cornbread was nasty. And while I thought the pork had good flavor, I didn't enjoy the texture.
