Question about Dairy Queen Wed, 11/1/06 3:10 PM (permalink)
I remember growing up in St. Louis going to DQ when they had a type of burger they called "Brazier". Sort of like a charbroiled whopper. It was YUM!

I moved to TX in 1982 the DQ's down here are a totally different breed of animal. They seem to favor overcooked tastelsess burgers and quasi chicken fried steak.

Can anyone shed any insight on this?

Tim, welcome to roadfood! In Texas, back in the 60s, the DQ Dude (CF steak sandwich) was great, not so now. I do not remember that Brazier burger but it sounds good. The DQ franchise owners may have had the freedom to do some things on their own?

Question is, is there anything still good at any DQ?

texas dairy queens are like no other state's.
there's one in far west texas that serves
all the beans and corn bread you can eat for 2.99
in small towns in east texas, like mt vernon,
the DQ is a meeting place where you talk to all
of your neighbors. i think larry mcmurtry mentions
DQ in The Last Picture Show and the sequel.
texans like their steak fingers with white gravy
      and their beltbusters.
i can still hear bob phillips commercials
shouting" there's a blizzard at DQ"

I remember their signs saying "Home of the Brazier Burger" but I do not remember ever seeing it on the menu. I always thought it was a discriptive word about their burgers.

"Brazier" IS a cooking technique. My local DQ no longer does this; much like Hardee's gave up on same many, many years ago. Why I will never understand, but both of these chain's burgers are deplorable now.

The only good non-ice cream item at DQ is the barbecue sandwich. Avoid everything else, Brazier'd or not.

You wanna have a stupid contest??...I always thought a "brazier" was a woman's undergarment. My Dad would laugh his head off when we'd go past and I'd ask him about what I thought was the "brassiere" burger.

We have a DQ in our home town of Wellsburg, WV and its the best fastfood burger around, but thats not saying a whole lot. I do seriously like DQ's burger though (in my area anyways).

a Brazier is defined as a container holding fire or hot coals

What's funny about DQ and Texas is that many Texans believe that it's a Texas-based company, and it's not-- it's based in Minnesota. DQ had no problem feeding into the misconception-- when I lived there some years back, they had an ad campaign with a DQ sign and the tag line, "Texas Stop Sign."

I know a lot of Texas towns where the DQ is the town restaurant...or was, last time I drove through them.

All they're good for IMO are the mocha moolattes which, unfortunate name aside, are best of breed in the iced coffee drinks, probably because they add about a thousand rich chocolate and sugar-laced calories to the coffee flavor.

When my late father was alive we used to drive all over the area around San Antonio. We used to stop in some of the Dairy Queens here.I used to get their tacos and a burger, sometimes we'd even have dessert.
I know what you mean about tasteless burgers,as Sonic's burgers,at least around here are the same way.
I have been staying away from fast food, and just prefer to make my own, though I will stop at Jack in the Box for their dollar hamburger or a jumbo jack.

I had 2 DQs in my hometown of Rome, NY growing up in the 80s. Didn't care for the food too much, but the Buster Bar, Peanut Buster Parfait, and the butterscotch dip for the cones was the bomb!

The Franchise DQ IN the city of Detroit doesn't offer Brazier bugers, but the locations in the immediate surrounding suburbs do. They're pretty decent up here.

My younger brother used to have the same pronunciation issues with "brazier".

A couple of times a year I'll get a craving for a foot-long hot dog with chili and cheese. I don't think any of the other FF places around here have such a menu item so DQ wins by default.

My personal opinion is that DQ has kicked it up a notch. I really enjoy their soft serve ice cream dipped in chocolate or butterscotch.

Their new facilities are very nice.

The newer stores...The ones Paul refers to in his post, Use the term "Brazier" on their Marque and all their advertising in this area. They are trying to get a larger
market share of the Burger Market...and step beyond being a "soft-serve stand". They do have several variations of their Burgers on the menu.

The 1/2 Pound Flamethrower Grill Burger doesn't sound so bad. I wonder how they cook the burgers?

The small, seasonally open (March-November) DQ Brazier near me cooks the burgers on a griddle. Same with the bigger DQ Grill and Chill (open all year) about 10 miles away

Al, I don't think it's a new term. I remember the "Brazier" term from a long time ago. I believe the DQs had 2 set-ups, with the Brazier foods and those that just had the Bar-B-Q and hot dogs. Cost a lot more to have the Brazier set-up. I recall a DQ owner telling me this at least 15 years ago. There's a battle starting between DQ and their franchisees. DQ wants the franchisees to do a bunch of new upgrades that cost an arm and a leg and the franchisees are claiming that they can't change the franchise agreement that drastically. Details are on the BlueMauMau site.

I've had many a blizzard, but I never once ordered warm food from a DQ.

We have had 2 DQ's close because corporate wanted them to upgrade to braziers, and they wanted to remain just the soft serve stand (March-Mid October)

We have 1 remaining soft serve only place, it is a sign of spring when they open for the season. Nothing in the world like the first of the season DQ soft serve cone.

I learned something about DQ last week. I'm preparing to buy some shares of Berkshire Hathaway and I discovered that DQ is one of their subsidiaries. I guess Warren Buffet loves those blizzards.
