Question about Lenny's in Branford, CT

The question: Lenny's lobster roll: is it hot buttered lobster, or is it a cold lobster salad? We have to go to CT this weekend & we're trying to decide whether to have lunch at Lenny & Joe's in Westbrook, where the lobster rolls (& fried clams & chowder) are a known and well-loved commodity, or try something "new" (to us) at Lenny's in Branford. Thanks to anyone who can help! Katherine

Their menu states that they have a lobster salad roll so I guess you will not be able to order a lobster roll.

If it is that important to you -- and it would be to me, too, because I love hot lobster rolls, and am not so fond of lobster salad rolls -- I would respectfully suggest that you pick up the phone and give them a call, to avoid disappointment. And, if you like, tell them that their web site is unclear, if you think that it is.

Apparently they have a hot lobster roll, even tho' it's not on the menu.

Lenny's used to be the Indian Head Inn. Back then, although by law bars in Connecticut were required to serve hot food, regular customers knew better than to actually eat anything there. It was the sort of place where you'd drink your beer right from the bottle because it was safer than using one of their glasses. The shot you'd get to go with your beer was OK because the rye whiskey would more or less sanitize the glass.

I'm not sure about the lobster roll, but the fried food (shrimp, clams, whatever) and the zuppa d'clams are really good. Chowder, too.

A quick update: Alas, I may never find out if Lenny's Indian Head Inn actually serves a hot lobster roll. We went Sunday for lunch and our party of four (two adults, two well-behaved 6 year olds) enjoyed some glacially slow and at times openly hostile service. So ordering off the menu seemed an unwise strategy. Even asking a question about the menu seemed foolhardy! The natural broth chowder was delicious and intensely flavored. The zuppa d'clams was tasty, albeit lukewarm. We shared a fried whole belly clam roll--the plate was overflowing with light and crisp fried clams. My daughters hotdogs were nicely grilled. Love the location on a salt marsh, and the interior with its wood booths and bar. No complaints about the very good food, although I wouldn't make a special trip here for it....unlike Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale in Westbrook, where we went for dinner. We enjoyed a fabulous meal (clam chowder, hot lobster rolls, fried clams) with fast, friendly and efficient service, despite the fact that the restaurant was full to overflowing. We did like Lenny's Indian Head chowder a wee bit better than the always-reliable chowder at Lenny & Joe's.
