Question for those using square.

Where did you get your visa/mastercard accepted stickers? I went to visa.com and it seems you need to be a member of their merchant services program. I don't believe using square qualifies me for this. Any ideas? I was just going to print up a sign but I thought something more official would look better.

A thank you. I had visited that page but I didn't realize that you could order without a merchant ID.

You can buy them off Ebay. The Square is supposed to come with a decal. If you didnt get one email them and ask for one......

As I recall, when my card scanner arrived from Square, there was a decal in the package.

I actually saw a Square decal last week while out eating my way through some hot dog research. I took a picture with my iphone just looked at. It has the Square insignia and four credit cards. Visa, MC, AE and Dis.

I thought Square only took Visa/MC. According to the home page for Square they do take all four.

It's well worth it. I wish I would have done it 6 months ago. My spot is right in the middle of campus and most kids don't carry cash anymore. I've seen my daily totals go up by $50 in the first week. The fees are very small. Today I did 53$ in credit charges. The total fees was $1.53. That seems worth it for sales I might not have had otherwise. I already had a smart phone and a data plan so the cost for me to start square was only the ten dollars to buy the dongle which comes with a ten dollar rebate.

I've posted many times about how much Square changed my business. It is one of the best things I ever did. But I figured I should also share the story of a client of mine. In early November, I was hired by a local Christmas tree farm to design a web site for them. This is the kind of place that is literally open from November 11 to December 24 every year, and that's it. The first day I met with the owner, I happened to mention that she could pay by cash, check, or credit, and she heaved a heavy sigh and mumbled "I wish we could accept credit!" I expressed surprise that they didn't and asked why, and she said they couldn't afford it: they were only open 2 months a year, but would have to pay all the fees year round. So I told her about Square, and showed her how it worked. That night, she and her husband drove down to Best Buy (an hour away!) and bought a WiFi repeater (to get their home internet to reach as far as their shop at the end of the driveway) and an ipod touch, and then went to the Apple store and got a Square swiper (with only a 6-week season, they didn't want to wait for one to come in the mail for free.) I stopped there a few days before Christmas just to see how things were going. In addition to loving the web site (which she said a lot of people said they found them through), in under 6 weeks she said they'd pushed just under $10,000 through Square. Most of that money, she said, they probably wouldn't have gotten before because the people didn't have cash and there's no ATM anywhere near their farm. She actually said that, although the web site is great and is working for them, it was worth my design fee just to learn about Square! So... There you go... Another Square success story. So do it - if you already have a smart phone anyway, you have literally nothing to lose. And even if you don't have a smart phone, it could be worth upgrading if you are in the right location.

I think, but don't know for sure, that Wild Dog was the first big Square pusher here. I was desperate to get it, but at the time didn't have a compatible smart phone and wasn't eligible for an upgrade yet. I finally got the new cell phone in November 2010 and ordered my Square reader while I was on vacation in Florida over thanksgiving so it would be waiting when I got home. I've been a raving fan ever since.

FriedTater Buck, I think Al Gore started Square. Maybe Obongo will claim credit for SQUARE since his campaign is using it. "We he had to invent a way for the common man to contribute to the sweeping Hope & Change". LOL

The only downside I see to square is less tips. People never seem to notice the tips section at the bottom while they are signing.

domromer The only downside I see to square is less tips. People never seem to notice the tips section at the bottom while they are signing. Walk them through the process and say "if you would like to leave a tip you can do so there" and point to the tip section. Then go on to say if you would like a recipt sent to your email, do so there and point again. It sounds more like you are walking them through the process instead of soliciting for a tip.

Yeah that's not a bad way to do it. I just need to do it fast enough. My location is on campus and it's everyone at once every hour. I'll have no customers for 45 minutes them for ten minutes between classes my line will be ten deep.

I have a sign on my tip jar that says "if you would like to leave a tip on your credit card, please tell me before you hand me your card."

No, Square doesn't work on the Kindle because the Kindle does not contain a hi-directional headset jack and therefore the swiper does not work. Unfortunately. Amazon cheaped out on a 10-cent part.
