Bil died yesterday at age 89 after drawing Family Circus for nearly 52 years, based on his own family. He will be sorely missed.

That is sad. It reminds me of when Al Capp died and Lil Abner was gone forever. Family Circus is one of my favorites.

And don't forget Mr. Keane's Roadfood connection. He was for some time a regular at the Sugar Bowl in Scottsdale.

Didn't Jeff Keane take over the pen-and-ink side of the cartoon a number of years ago? Until I hear otherwise I'm going to assume it's possible he'll keep it going. I wonder if Stephen Pastis will find a way to work a tribute into "Pearls Before Swine". Every so often one of the FC kids shows up in a PBS strip in way that's very different than usual. Brad

Pastis and Keane were actually friends to the point that Keane sent Pastis a signed calendar every year. And yes Jeff Keanes been doing the cartoon for years now.

Brad You are correct - Jeff has been doing the strip for several years now. It's likely many of them are recycled, being in a world of big clunky station wagons and console tv sets, but maybe that's just the world they inhabit. Pastis did write an affectionate tribute to Bil in his blog, and pointed out how his USO-sponsored tour of Vietnam inspired him to go with son Jeff to Iraq and Afghanistan. Both the 'Circus' and Pastis' snarking on it should continue, if it's at all a just world.
