One of the coolest human beings you'd ever have been fortunate to meet, William Penzey patriarch of the Spice House which he founded along  with his wife Ruth has passed. His son started Penzey's a chain of spice purveyor stores.

Thanks for posting this. Long time fan of Penzry's spices until a Spice House location opened near me.  We like how the people at SH are more friendly and willing to explain things and how to use them. Seems that is an extension of Bill Sr's outlook. I've met his daughter Patty a few times because she is very active in the business.

      Sorry to hear this.
I like both Spice House and Penzey's (and Spice Works, the smaller shop that the senior Bill used to run after semi-retiring from Spice House).  Definitely a different feel for each business, but I like shopping at both (alas, the nearest Penzey's is 3 hours away...)

I always buy my Adobo Chil powder and The Hot Mustard powder from them, nice people to do business with. He sounds like a guy I'd have loved to have met...like The AncientOne!

Very sorry to hear this, he sponsored the Walk for PKD every year. Also they have a LOT of salt free spices for me. RIP, Bill and thank you!

Bill gets one last ticket from the City of Milwaukee!!!

They had Bill's service at the old Pabst Beer Complex on a Sunday and the parking checker wrote out tickets for the hearse and for the cars of the mourners.

Now that's what I call a real death tax.
Embarassed city officials quickly rescinded the tickets but still the checker should be fired imho for lacking common sense.

I probably paid for the funeral with all the Penzey's spices I have bought over the years, especially since they opened the store in Torrance and I could get the scent of each spice. A fun day was always taking a "newbie" to the store and seeing how many spices they walked out with. I never thought I would use blends until I tried Penzey's. He created a quality product and leaves a good legacy.
