Unless you saw "The Outlaw" when it first came out you have no idea who Jane Russell was. She took movieland by storm. Well she made a big debut at any rate. One of the reviewers of the movie said "Jane Russell, as an actress, is a big bust". She turned out fine and lived to a ripe old age----RIP Jane.

In the jargon of the day, she was a sassy, classy broad.

That was the jargon of her day alright--- Today it would be unwise to say such a thing. Not too many classy broads around either-- Sinatra made that term famous ---- today b---h would be accepted though.

Hello All, I enjoyed her movies, but enjoyed more that she took her life in her hands and did what she wanted to, outside of Hollywood. Take Care, Fieldthistle

Unfortunately PP and I knew her best from her Playtex bra commercials. RIP Jane.

A favorite movie for me is "His Kind of Woman" from 1951 - partially directed by Howard Hughes, it uneasily straddles the tough-guy actioner and breezy comedy genres. In addition to Vincent Price, Raymond Burr, and Jim Backus, it stars Robert Mitchum and the erstwhile Russell in her trademark bold, take-no-crap persona. He's always cool and she is pretty awesome.

The Wikipedia article about Jane Russell delighted me with this quote from Bob Hope: "Culture is the ability to describe Jane Russell without using your hands."
