RIP Kodachrome

I can't say that I didn't see this coming. I've never been a transparency shooter but I do have a single unexposed 36-frame roll in the freezer, so I suppose I should pick a meaningful use for it. Brad

For most of us that started shooting in the pre-digital age, this was the first slide film we used. It had great colors, especially the reds, but its slow speed did limit its usefulness.

No surprise here either. Before I moved to a digital SLR four years ago, I used Kodachrome a lot. I like its realistic color. I tried Fujichrome, Agfachrome, and Ektachome but always went back to Kodachrome. I knew the end was nearing several years ago when it was getting hard to find a processor. Anyone need an Olympus OM2 and OM4?

I use to shoot Kodachrome back in the 60s. But I had moved away from transparencies before the digital age came upon us. I fell in love with Fuji Reala print film - extremely fine grain, great color and dynamic range. But, alas, I have given up on film altogether. I haven't shot a roll of film in probably three years. I thoroughly enjoy digital but sometimes wax nostalgic for film. (I still have two film SLRs that I just can't part with - a 1990s Canon Elan 7E and a 1960s Yashica). I am curious as to how many Roadfooders still do film, either exclusively or in conjunction with digital. Have a great day. Mike

Pual Simon wrote and performed the following When I think back On all the crap I learned in high school It's a wonder I can think at all And though my lack of education Hasn't hurt me none I can read the writing on the wall Kodachrome They give us those nice bright colors They give us the greens of summers Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, Oh yeah I got a Nikon camera I love to take a photograph So mama don't take my Kodachrome away If you took all the girls I knew When I was single And brought them all together for one night I know they'd never match my sweet imagination everything looks WORSE in black and white Kodachrome They give us those nice bright colors They give us the greens of summers Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, Oh yeah I got a Nikon camera I love to take a photograph So mama don't take my Kodachrome away Mama don't take my Kodachrome away Mama don't take my Kodachrome away Mama don't take my Kodachrome away

mjsneddon I am curious as to how many Roadfooders still do film, either exclusively or in conjunction with digital. Mike My wife uses a digital camera, I still use a 35mm film camera. We still have 2 rotary phones in our homes, one is a Princess phone in the bedroom and a wall phone in the kitchen, both have been with is for over 30 years, I got them from my parents when we first were wed, they both work perfectly and have great sonics. we have another 3o year Western Electric -fist generation touch tone phone that works perfectly as well in the garage. We have gone through about 4 or 5 "new fangled" phones in that time in the living room and den and we both have cells we use while away from home. Untill 2 weeks ago I had an early 1970s Panasonic "astroanaut-space" color TV with rabbit ears working perfectly in the garage for use in the back yard, I can't use it any more due to digital TV, I guess I should buy a converter. I still have a massive LPs and 45s records collection with a turntable next to my Cd collection, I have 8mm films-now converted to either VHS or DVD, and a film projector. When something still works we don't keep up with the Joneses or technology untill needed.

I entered the 35mm world when I joined the military in 1960. Before that I had a Kodak Box Camera one a 616 size the other a 620. They only saw Verichrome Pan B/W from me. When I arrived overseas I immediately bought a Richo, then a Canonnet 35 mm rangefinder (with the first internal light metering system I'd ever used). Kodachrome was the film of choce then. (10 ASA) When Kodachrome II came out I jumped to it (ASA 25). I never was much of an Ektachrome user. Later most of my 35 mm stuff was home-rolled B/W Illford or Tri-X done in my home or school darkroom. I tried Cibachrome processing a few times but it cost to much considering the mistakes I would make !! When I moved to digital I sold off my Cannon AE-1's (2), My Cannon A-1, and my standby Canon FT. I like my Canon 20D, but will soon purchase another 'Point n Shoot' digital as I am tired of lugging the DSLR into restaurants for roadfood reports !!! RIP Film Stuff, You served me well.

My 35mm camera conked out on me when I was enroute to the Roadfood festival in NOLA back in April, and I didn't get to take a single photo on that entire trip. The first thing that I did after getting home was head over to Target and buy a Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS digital camera. Definitely one of the best purchases I've ever made; I really love that camera. If you look at my trip reports, you can see what great pictures it takes. Film? Never again.

I feel much the same as jonjax71 "When something still works we don't keep up with the Jonses or technology until needed". Love, love, love the fact that he still has some rotary phones in the house (even two princesses, my favorite). I did get a digital camera before going on my first and only trip to Hawaii a couple of years ago. It is my favorite little toy! I went through dozens of Kodak disposables so if I had a decent SLR I would probably still be using that. Just got my first cell phone this Christmas as a present, otherwise I could live without it. I think people lie when they say they can hear just fine on them. I was looking forward to being the last person on Earth not to have one. Give me that corded Princess anyday!

I still use film when I go to the races at Watkins Glen or if I plan on making prints. I've slowed down a bit on film since the drug chains have raised the price of developing film by a $1.
