Yep, Squirrels are rodents just like Mice, Chipmunks, Prairie Dogs, Gophers and Groundhogs. Rodents make up the largest Order of Mammals. There is over 1450 species and they are 40& of the Mammal population

I guess if I was in dire need of food, a rodent might be ok but I won't be in dire need anytime soon.

Rabbits are not rodents, but squirrels are. 
While I would not eat a rat or mouse, I would eat & have eaten squirrel .  It's been a long time since I had squirrel but my mom makes great squirrel & gravy, it makes the best gravy ever!!  In late fall & winter my grandparents would eat squirrel at least  2-3 times a month.  My grandfather used a 22 rifle & he really could shoot the eye out of a squirrel.
 

Can't see eating any critter that tastes like chicken cause I'd just soon have chicken.

rabbit does not taste like chicken...... its about 143.6% better !!
if you like fried chicken, you will drool over fried rabbit
if you love baked chicken and gravy over rice, you will slap your grandma for a rabbit version instead
