If you have 5, and only 5, things to rate a really good dog what would they be?

Snap, quality and flavor of the dog, freshness of the bun, quality of the condiments and it better be some darn tasty chili!

For me taste is the #1 and most important thing. The rest are secondary. When enjoying a dog for the first time, I add just a little mustard. Regardless of what a dog is made from (with the exceptions of poultry and veggie dogs, which I won't eat) I look for a great taste. Secondary, but related to taste is the blend of spices, the right amount of snap (I prefer natural casing dogs to skinless) the cooking method, etc. I also prefer a longer dog (like Syd's) that hangs out a little bit past the bun. Love those end bites.

John, have you ever had a bird dog with natural casing? I'm normally opposed to poultry dogs too, but I had one recently that had a lamb casing. It wasn't bad at all. They didn't try to disguise the turkey as pork... they spiced it as turkey and it tasted really good. Kind of like thanksgiving in a tube shape. See ya Steve

I'm glad you guys responded to this thread before I got to it. From the title, I was ready to describe my Scotties as contenders for a Roadfood "Top Dog" title. They travel well, love BBQ , and pee where they are told to go. Would that all roadfooders were as considerate! Enjoy your Weinies.

My bird dogs have all had natural casings. In fact, I've never heard of a bird dog that didn't have a natural casing.

See ya Steve I have had a turkey dog once. I don't think I liked it. It was long ago. And skinless. If you look at the ingredients on a pack of Oscar Mayer (meat dogs) you'll see turkey as an ingredient. Along with pork. But I'm sure you're talking about all turkey. I'll try one next time I come across one. Especially with casing. I had turkey bacon recently, and was surprised that I liked it. Have you heard of a Danish dog called Polser? In Iceland I believe it's spelled Pylser. Made of lamb. I have had one at F&B in New York City and it was very good. Spicy like an all beef dog and better than the beef/pork dog they serve there.
