Some years ago I read a taste comparison of spreads free of trans fats and saturated fats, and the winner was Brummel & Brown. I tried it, and liked it better than whatever we had been using. We have stayed with it since, although my wife has been trying Smart Balance(s) because of cholesterol problems.

Both are useless for cooking, for which I continue to use butter, when needed.

Miami Don, I use Smart Balance to saute lots of things and often use it in sauces. Always tastes good to me. I do use butter in baked items where structure is important.

I have always bought salted slightly butter. I noticed that many recipes call for unsalted. There is not very much salt in the butter I buy. Does it affect the end product?

My vote for Smart Balance(regular) I use it for health reasons..but actually prefer its taste over some butters. My kids only want Smart Balance. As for "I can"t believe it's not butter"...I can't believe they haven't been sued saying I can't believe its not butter...it's taste is classic margarine..and not good margarine....NOT butter. I believe Smart Balance is closest...and for health..preferable!

Uh huh. Yes, nothing tastes exactly like butter." I agree. But "lard?" Just what do you think butter is? Here's a dictionary definition: "A solid emulsion of fat globules, air, and water made by churning milk or cream and used as food" Smart Balance, contrary to your comment, isn't lard. You might want to read the label.

My sainted mother said, and I quote "God created butter, chemists made oleo and the other stuff, I'll go with God".

And so, I have never had anything but butter in my home. My mother died at 96 and had not been to a doctor in 40 years---so much for the health factor. She also had 2 boiled eggs every other day------except on Sundays when she had bacon and eggs---eggs fried in the bacon fat. One morning in 1996 she sat down for breakfast and died.

We blamed it on the butter, eggs and bacon, and lack of medical attention. RIP Mom !!!!!

This is another case of a poster who knows nothing about what they are talking about. Smart Balance contains no lard, only vegetable oils.

I am not a particular fan of the product but I had to check it out.

Ancient Mariner,
Check with your neighborhood doctor concerning the lists of dearly departed who didn't live to 96 eating a steady diet of fat. Sorry...oh and if people live to 96 and smoke...does that make smoking healthy...Ask around about how many people ate excess fat and DIDN'T live to 96. MODERATION! Butter is ok..eggs...bacon grease etc...but in moderation.

I don't see anywhere where ancientmariner said anything about eating excess fat. It seems all he is saying that we don't need to fear butter, or bacon.

If people eat moderately, then maybe not as many people would need smart balance and the like. That doesn't mean that everyone who needs smart balance are bad eaters, it just means there are some people who wouldn't need all these substitutes if they watched their diet more closely.

I buy unsalted butter. I do my own seasoning.

Well, until I retired, for some I was the neighborhood doctor and you are right. My own Mom smoked and is 89--with emphysema.

As I said above, mostly I use Smart Balance Plus (IMHO, the healthiest of their various formulations). But for some things I use all the other products mentioned: butter, lard, bacon grease, ghee etc. I use those where their unique flavor really counts. For example, I think refried beans are much better with lard. I think bacon grease is essential to some southern cooking.

Still, for 90% (or so) of uses, Smart Balance works just fine and is healthier no matter what anyone else here says. Facts are facts.

I have recently switched to Brommel & Brown for day to day use on toast & biscuits

I have always used butter in my cooking
(except cookies - and they depend on what I want the cookie to do like making it chewy)

Oleo! Now there's an ancient word (pardon the pun). How many can remember that was the word for margarine? Also, how many people can remember oleo came in a package with a red dot and you had to knead it to make it yellow like butter? When oleo first came out the dairy industry fought it and they had laws to not allow it to be sold in chunks and sticks of yellow like butter. That was the case in Indiana back in the 50s.

Davy -- same case on Looooong Island, NY as well as Indiana in the 50s. I think the term is actually oleo margarine and oleo didn't sound too good so the name was shortened. Looked yukky and tasted yucky and was yucky back then.

As far as my mother went she had been a chef and cooked her own meals every day, and they included plenty of vegetables and fruit. At age 87 she cooked a crown roast of park with a ton of vegetables and 2 pies for me, my family and a few friends. Started dinner with shrimp cocktails and didn't want any help until it was time to do the dishes. And every afternoon she had a glass of sherry---and she whistled while she worked---cooking and whistling and doing her thing even though widowed with 5 kids at 42-------RIP Mom.

I'm 51 now, my doctor told me i'd add 5 years to my life if I stopped smoking, drinking beer, cut down on salt, butter, red meat, spicy foods, etc.
I figure if I make it to 70,I,ve had a good life living a happy life the way I want for 19 more years,
or living a healthier more miserable life for 24 more years?
I'll take the 19 MY WAY.

People always debate on real butter and margarine, personally speaking both are kind of same; however margarine have lower calories than butter. And “I Can't Believe It's Not Real Butter” is amazing margarine. Once, I were browsing about facts of margarine and found an amazing website (enjoymargarineeveryday.com) where I found everything about margarine. I think this would be helpful to stop war between what margarine and real butter.

In our elementary school cafeteria, there was a sign at the entrance that said "Oleo used here instead of butter".

We use butter at home when not serving meat meals, and with meat we use the Smart Balance (with Flax).

My sister and her husband used to like I Can't Believe It's Not Butter and always had a good sized tub or two of it in the fridge.  They lived in Central Oregon and used to enjoy camping and usually that meant they'd really head deep into the backwoods for camping.

On one trip, it was the first morning camping and because they liked the way their campfire potatoes came out with their I Can't Believe It's Not Butter, they stoked up the fire, heated up the cast iron frying pan, took out a big I Can't Believe It's Not Butter tub that they brought along ... opened it ... and found that that particular tub was holding leftover macaroni salad!

They we're shocked and my sister heard herself saying "I can't believe it's not I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!"

Everyday some new study comes out. The margarine of today is not even close as to what it was 40 years ago. Today it is almost nothing but a whipped oil of some sort. I strictly use this Amish Butter I get at a small market the next town over. It is $8.00
but that is for a 2 lb +, roll. So it is about the same as regular stupid market butter. Plus it is fresh, no additives and the taste is beyond compare.

We use real salted butter for most things, but we do keep a tub of Land o'Lakes Fresh Buttery Taste Spread. Goes good with a few things, like baked potatoes. Slightly better for you than butter, but with fewer fat grams. The taste benefits from the addition of cream to it.
