Real Hot Dog Coming to Mississippi. Fri, 04/8/05 8:12 PM (permalink)
Southerners rejoice! It looks as though my dream of bringing a real hot dog to the South is nearly realized. We're about 6 weeks away from bringing an all-beef, natural-casing hot dog to the tiny haven of McComb, Mississippi.

Will "Real Deal Dogs" be the only real hot dog in the state? I'm sure this group would know. There are a few Nathan's skinless around, but I only know of a handful of natural casing hot dogs in the entire South.

Wish us luck, and we welcome folks from Arkansas, Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and South Carolina to come experience "the snap." And for all transplanted dog-lovin' Northerners and Westerners, I think you've found a home.

There is still some time for suggestions, as I respect all the knowledge and opinions of this astute group.

p.s. Where'd the thread bemoaning Southern Hot Dogs as merely Lips and "Hind Areas" go?

What brand will you be grilling up? What size?

Fox - 99% certain it's going to be a Vienna Beef, size to be determined.

Signman - Actually not going to grill. Looks like we're steaming only, at least to start.

Good luck in your new venture. I brand with Vienna Beef in my business. The standard size for a natural casing Vienna Beef hot dog in Chicago and Wisconsin is 8/1 and 4/1 or 5/1 for a "jumbo." If you keep you prices fair, you'll do a greater volume.

I hope Real Deal Dogs will be a smashing sucess. Being a southerner by birth I have had many things to rejoice over. I remember sometime back in the early 60's when someone brought "real toothpaste" to the Carolinas from up North. I just wish there was a good Lutefisk place down here. Have to go all the way to Minnesota to get the real thing. http://www.davethefox.com/words/0112lutefisk.htm

Is this our very own John Fox?

"Connecticut has a well-respected hot dog tradition. Experts like John Fox say Connecticut is second to New Jersey for best hot dogs. (But Fox is from the Garden State, so he may have his allegiances.)"

                (Shameless self-promotion...)

"Real Deal Dogs" opened yesterday in southern Mississippi, serving a Vienna Beef natural-casing dog. I claim that it's the only "authentic" hot dog in the state, and one of only a very few in the South. Despite many nay-sayers, the response has been phenomenal. We sold out of my initial order in the first two days, and I had to load in a big new batch from Chicago. I hope all Mississippians and Southerners will find a bit of refuge here.

Now...I just have to find a good bun.

Thanks, hot dog folks for all your input!

Congratulations! I've never understood why there were no good hot dog places around here. (I'm in the northern part of Mississippi - the MEMPHIS part of Mississippi.)

So what are you putting on these dogs? What sides? One of my favorite things in the world is Chicago Hot Dogs. We've got family in McComb. Maybe now we have an extra incentive to go for a visit.

Way to go! You can order the poppy seed buns directly from your Vienna Beef distributor. They're delivered frozen and can be steamed after a very short thaw time. They come in steamer boxes of 10. You can keep them frozen for about two weeks, but once thawed, must be used. You can also order the Chipico(original Vienna Beef) condiments directly from Vienna: neon green relish, sport peppers, and kosher dill pickles. You can order large, medium, and small spears or the smooth or krinkle thin pickle wafers. The condiments are available in 2, 5, and 6 gallon plastic pails. Ask your rep for some marketing materials: Banners, Metal Signs, posters, counter cards, table tents, menu board, shirts, hats, and aprons. Keep up the good work and if you have any questions, drop me an e-mail.

Good Luck! I also love real good hot dog and was pleased when a hot dog cart opened here in Jackson, Tn. with Vienna brand hot dogs with a snap. He could not sell them and had to go to a typical mushy southern style hot dog. He is doing great now and sells plenty.
