Recon Mission - This will be fun Tue, 06/24/08 5:51 PM (permalink)
I am buying a cart as soon as I can save up enough cash for one.......

In the meantime I am soaking up everything I can about this business.

This spot is up the street from where I currently work as an engineer for a wireless company(just a few more years of that hopefully) :) .

I drive by it all the time and it's always got people standing, crossing, coming and going. Foot traffic is high because of the college across the steet. Car traffic is insane. Located just to the SW is the city bus depot. You can see some of their vehicles. A city park is off to the west where everyone goes swimming and walking. There are ball fields and tennis courts adajcent to this spot. It's 1 mile out of downtown.

It has some nice shade and that bus stop is always dropping off and picking up college kids. I figure I can park a cart under the tree that is just above the bus stop and park my vehicle right there in the parking lot.

The closest competition for food is a corner 7/11 and a Quiznos...besides the college cafeteria. Quiznos is an easy $5 bucks just walking in the door. They are expensive + who wants to run away for grub and possibly miss the bus???? :)

I want to sell hotdogs/CSD, sodas, and chips - simple menu. City rules prohibit setting up within 300 feet of existing food establishments, I'm outside of that zone. The City allows vendors in it's parks so if that little easement I want to set up on is park, which I'm checking into, I'll be good to go. If not, maybe I'll just take up one of those parking spots and stay off the grass.

I am going to take a day off soon and sit at that spot from 10AM-2PM on a typical weekday and see what kind of foot traffic it has. Those numbers should be pretty good.

Am I missing anything in my approach? Are there any obstacles I'm not able to see because of inexperience that are obvious to you guys? All advice is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks

City ordinance says I can vend in any park that does not have a city concession. Now, I just need to dig through their parks and rec data to see if this park has a concession. Or maybe I'll just drive over there.

    Are we having fun yet?
