I for one, and I would venture to say many people on this site, like you and respect your views. I posted that silly question in just that spot for a specific reason that had nothing to do with you. I guess my post needed a "tongue in cheek" emoticon. I did not seriously think that you might have thought it was me, nor do I have any obsessive need to be liked (though I do (a) appreciate the fact that you enjoy my posts, even if you disagree with me; and (b) have other obsessive needs). quote: What struck me about this article is that it quotes someone from Orlando, Florida who, apparently, regularly patronizes Red Lobster and has good things to say about it. I am not overly familiar with the Orlando area, but there have got to be better seafood places there than RL. And I'll bet that if they really looked, they could find some that are at least as, if not more, affordable. That is certainly the case here in the Washington, DC area, and I would think that the Orlando area would be no different.

That is certainly the case here in the Washington, DC area, and I would think that the Orlando area would be no different. Actaully, it doesn't surprise me much. Orlando pretty much has a dearth of "roadfood" quality establishments, in general, and seafood is no real exception. Yes, I am sure that there are one or two -- and if I dig deep into my files, I might come up with one, but it does not surprise me. As much as Orlando has tried to become a more cosmopolitan city of late (the last, say, 10-15 years), it still plays to the absolute lowest common denominator -- and chains rule the area like no place else I have ever been. I still have my favorites, and RL is nowhere near the list, but it is tough to get good seafood in O-town. On the other hand, I frequently drive the 45 minutes from another direction to hit Titusville's Dixie Crossroads....which would be a major improvement over RL. Heck, the thing that most people like about RL is the cheese biscuits -- Dixie Crossroads tops that with their corn fritters! Steve

Hello all. The only reason I like RL is that they have a smoking section here in Harrisonburg, Va.. My wife likes seafood and I like to smoke during a meal. Take Care.

Here's my Red Lobster story of the one and only time I set foot in one: Several years ago my daughter was graduating from 8th grade. We told her we would celebrate the day (it was a weekday, the family thing was for the weekend) by taking her to any restaurant of her choosing. In spite of 12 years of brainwashing against chain restautrants by myself and my wife, she chose Red Lobster. The graduation ended at about 11:30 AM, by 12 we were in line at Red Lobster on Rt 22 in Union NJ. Along with many other families from the same graduation. And, in spite of a posted opening time of 11:30 AM, no one had been seated yet, the help was just arriving for work, and chaos reigned. Several of us parents huddled together and decided to head to a Mom & Pop family restaurant a few miles away. The kids had a great time, the food was good, Case closed. --Ken

rbpalmer: I remember when I lived in DC, I was amazed at the amount of chain restaurants that flourished in that area (and this was only a few years ago); while there are plenty of good independent restaurants there, the chains that proliferated on highways in the burbs, only a mile or two beyond the capitol itself, like the Jefferson Davis in Virginia, were chock a block with IHOP's, Don Pablo's, Red Lobster's, etc. And the crowds were unbelievable. I just wonder if there are sadly many people all over who are too timid to try anything else that insist on these places. Heck, the biggest grossing Applebee's and Red Lobster's in the country are guess where? Times Square, Manhattan!! And the number of less expensive, better quality restaurants just a subway ride away are just amazing... And the astonishing thing is? They found out that it is not just the tourists that are going to these places, either!

Why anyone would even think of going to a RL, or in fact ANY Darden's restaurants, is beyond me... http://www.darden.com/

Originally posted by cheesehead I hadn't been to an RL in almost 10 years (Antioch/Pittsburg, Ca) PeachPie, everything around here is either burger pits or steakhouses. The best dinner club in town just closed. Been here for 50+ years. The original owners turned it over to the kids, and the kids claim they can't compete with the chain fast food joints that have moved into town.
Of course they can't compete, it's because of all the drones who go to the chains because "everyone else does". I know everything I say always falls on deaf ears, but why is it that that the mom n pops that have been around for 50 + years are all failing NOW. Not back in the 1940's when they started, or the 1950's, or the 1960's or the 1970's or even the 1980's. They all started to fail in the 1990's. Not because of bad business, not because the quality went down, not because the family didn't want to continue those are all cop out excuses. The real reason is because of the Chains. That is the soul reason why. It is such a tragedy to know that within the next decade or so, there won't be any Mom N Pops left. Ony the "Haute Cuisine" Mom n Pops will be around, and maybe perhaps a couple of ethnic restaurants. All the Mom n Pops serving local cuisine will be gone. There will be nothing left, it is evident by many on the this forum who have pages and pages of discussion about White Castle, Applebees and Waffle House, yet when someone brings up a local place, maybe you get a response or two and then on to next topic about the new shoe leather burger at Burger King. Of course there are mom and pop's restaurants out there! You just have to look for them. Watch "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" on the Food Channel, for ideas! Bigdave125

I remember going to RL with my family in the early 70's. The food was good, service was not so good as the were always packed, and the prices seemed reasonable. I been many times since then, and after living out of the country for 5 years (Japan) my wife and I went to one here in San Diego. Well we were both dissapointed. The food was average, the service was terrible, and the prices were ridiculous! We won't be going back. It's too bad, because I really used to enjoy going there. Bigdave125 BTW, does anyone remember a menu item they called " broiled Icelandic lobster tails"? They were small. Maybe 3 or so inches long. They split them open and broiled them and gave you maybe 12 to 14 on a plate. Man, they were good! Does anyone know how to get them now? Just curious!)

I imagine the Icelandic lobsters were langostinos. When I was in Iceland the lobster house or Humarhusid specialized in langostinos. http://www.humarhusid.is/ And while Red Lobster is not one of the great seafood restaurants, I have read - I think in the Washington Post - that their live lobsters are on par with those from the nicest restaurants and the ones at RL are available at a signifigant savings in price.

I worked in a red lobster in the late 70's. At that time the only lobster on the menu was 1/2 tail sreved with a steak. That and a languistino dish. I hated it so bad I never went back the next day. I took my girl friend there back in 74 and had the icelandic lobster tails which werent half bad. britt

Red Lobster should change their name in the interest of truth in advertising and simply call themselves Overcooked Shrimp.

People just need to get the word out that "langostino lobster" isn't lobster - it's actually a sort of crab.

They used to have these Langostino nachos at the one in San Antonio on I-35N and Walzem Road. They were very good. I haven't eaten there in a long time, and it's not cheap. San Antonio really doesn't a lot of seafood restaurants, though there are a few mexican ones opening up here. I got food poisoning from eating at the one on Loop410 near North Star Mall. Last time we ever ate at that one, which was the same day the waitress took the cash for the bill, and never came back with my change.Never did find her. Best seafood I have eaten was made by me or my dad when growing up.
