Piggybacking on Chewingthefat's topic. How about some current regional phrases not heard all over the country? Mash the button when telling someone to turn on (or off) a light. Saying crick for creek (wrong!) Pulling bone for chicken breasts and...

We, of course, in the politically correct state of Wisconsin(!) dont have ANY regional phrases that could be accounted for. They are all hiding in Illinois.

CCinNJ Gondola like smack? Gondola is a sub sandwich. This term is used around Peoria/Bloomington/Normal Illinois. Avanti's and La Gondola are regional chains that make them.

bill voss sorry, but San Francisco is "The City". I have heard people in many areas use the phrase "the city" referring to the local big city, but have also heard people point to it as a sign of arrogance when NYers use that same term. I'm not saying we aren't arrogant, just that "the city" thing shouldn't be used as proof of the theory. How about this...in my area people say "standing on line" where most away from the NY area say "standing IN line".

When I was a kid, when there were no malls or shopping centers, my parents always used the term, "going to town", when they were going shopping for something other than groceries, even though we lived in the city. My 92 year-old mother still says she's "going to town" when she's going to go shopping.

Dimmie You must keep the "YONDER" use in context ! YONDER is within sight, usually in the same room if you're inside. "Lookee there, Yonder's Grandpa laying in the driveway!" OVER-YONDER is further away, think down the street or somewhere in the community but usually out of sight. "Beth-Ann's Over-Yonder picking up a Deer that Billie-Jim-Bob hit with his Bike on the way home from school". Then there's WAY-OVER-YONDER, Think in terms of Cattle-drives or Lewis and Clark Wandering. "Poppa had to move the 'still WAY OVER YONDER out to Bubba's Farm afore he got busted again." A lot of the regional FOOD terms have faded from use due to the invasion of the common definitions brought in by the Chain restaurant Menu's. People wanted to know that a 'Shake' was a thick, cold, flavored, ice-cream based type of Drink. I won't forget when I got a Shake at a snack bar on Ft Devens, MASS shortly after arrival... Thin runny chocolate milk whipped in a blender. I had to learn to ask for a Frappe to get what I wanted. Same with Clams...Eating HoJo Clam Strips mislead me into thinking that thats what clams 'were'...until I visited the Cape Ann Clam places in Idswich and Rowley !! But then, who remembers Party- Line and asking the operator for the time-of-day??
