Relish is a new hot dog place in Westport, a midtown area of KC. I had my first hot dog in 7 years (yeah, yeah, I know, 7 long years) at Relish and enjoyed it immensely. It was a Vienna Dog with some sort of cheese sauce, grilled onions, mustard and a very good poppy seed bun. Their menu is varied, with Italian Sausages, Brats, Chicago Dogs and very good fries. One person in my party said the owner should use the larger size Vienna, but the size I had seemed fine to me. The potato salad, cole slaw and fries are all made on site and all of the dogs are grilled. I thought it was all very high quality and the owner is extremely nice. Kansas City really needed this place to open.
Business appears to be booming at Relish. It's at 4116 Broadway, KCMO, 64111.

Hope it's still there when I'm down for the American Royal and again at Christmas. Unfortunately, Westport seems to be emptying out at a steady rate. Same story at Country Club Plaza. Sadly, the population, I'm told, is gravitating toward the suburban malls.

Interestingly enough, Westport is becoming an ethnic restaurant destination. Not all of them are great, but they are decent. There are 2 Japanese, 1 middle eastern, a Vietnamese place, a very hip and excellent Indian restaurant called Korma Sutra, a Thai place called Thai Place. A little French cafe is in construction as well. This is all in a 2 block area! I'm sure Relish will still be there when you're here in the fall. They are doing some serious business in this hot dog deprived area. Relish is in the same 2 block area as all of the above. The CC Plaza on the other hand is one big chain restaurant mecca.

We ate at the Westport Thai Place last Christmas. Had a very nice meal. I think I like the Overland Park location a little better. It's just more low-key, not as trendy (and, I think, not as expensive). You're not wrong about the evolution of the neighborhood. Westport has been a regular stop for us whenever we're in town for the last 26 years and some of the changes have been a little disheartening. An ethnic restaurant Mecca is a good thing though.
