Thanks, agnesrob, lleechef and Ann.

FriedClamFanatic, it does sound like fun. I think it would be neat to stay in a caboose! Out here, you can stay on the steamship Queen Mary. The rooms are small which is what it was like in the Queen's heyday, but it does allow you to eat in some good restaurants and see what it was like during the time the Queen was traveling across the Atlantic.

Great report, thank you (especially for the photos).  I really enjoyed that area (Reno, Tahoe, Truckee) when I was out there in 2008.  I'm a big CFS fan, but I like it true Texas/Oklahoma style without sausage in the gravy.

I agree, Ram4. Neither Jax' or Cracker Box's CFS had sausage in the gravy. I've really seen very few places that have sausage, except on biscuits.

Awesome trip report -- the food looks fantastic. But I have to play train nerd and note that the V&T's Inyo was built in 1875, not 1895

I noticed that, too...but didn't want to embarrass you or blemish an otherwise fantastic report.

Thanks, Pancho. I called yesterday to verify a few facts before I finished the review and talked with Jerry, the owner. It made me even happier about choosing them-----he is a true gentleman and passionate about keeping the spirit of the place true to what he started doing. A nice guy too!

Did you ever come across a place in Truckee called Burger Me! ?  I just saw it on DDDs on the Food Network.  WOW!  The burgers looked fantastic!

Ed, while I have no desire to move back out West, I would like to very much check out those parts of California, and areas outside Vegas in Nevada. I've actually got a list now. Whether this happens is another matter, but as long as I've got REAL pictures to show my other half, that might be all that's needed. He's never seen the West.

Ed -
You really capture the full flavor of each stop with your great photographs!  Great work!  I love the mix of colors, people, food and everything in between.
Now that you got the trains and automobiles, we just need the planes!  Maybe the Reno Air Races!
Looking forward to catching up in Cinci...

Ed..glad you liked my suggestions...

My trip to Las Vegas was cancelled due to vehicle troubles...

The Alabama Hills are west of Lone Pine, on the way up to (Mt) Whitney Portal

Just east of Lone Pine, across from where the railroad tracks used to be, are a few buildings left where much of the filming of Bad Day At Black Rock took place (the story setting was supposed to be Gerlach, NV where the Black Rock Desert is)

North of Lone Pine is Laws, where a RR museum is...equipment stranded when SP took out the RR tracks that used to run up the Owens Valley.

Schat's bakery is world famous.

In Bridgeport, I eat at The Bridgeport Inn...was it closed when you were there..?

It looked pretty much like the whole town was closed. If the Bridgeport inn is the white building with a small restaurant in front, it looked liked it may ha ve been open. Last time I had been in bridgeport, I went to a nice little museum. This time, ev en the tumbleweeds were still.

The whole town of Lone Pine "closed" or are you talking about Bridgeport...?
What day of the week, and time of day were you there..?  Was is during a "blow" when the winds kick up alkali dust from Owen's Dry Lake..?

I've been there a LOT (Lone Pine), and have never seen the town "closed"

Besides all the wonderful movie history & memorialbillia, the film museum also shows movies made in the area (the museum is the town theater)

It's still winter when you went there...in fact, today (May 5th) the snow level is dropping down to 5,000 feet in the Yolla Bolly's (Northwest CA), and CA Hwy 120 (Tioga Pass, east end of Yosemite)) won't be plowed for another few weeks...

Being an owner of all the Hopalong Cassidy and Lone Ranger films, I recognize and have read about Lone Pine. Your pictures show the amazing beauty of this gorgeous piece of the "old west". Thanks!!!

It was Bridgeport that was "closed".  Lone Pine was just too early for me to eat lunch and I really wanted to go to Jolly Kone in Bridgeport. I actually wrote in this thread about the Alabama Hills Cafe in Lone Pine----I had an excellent lunch there on my way back.

Lee,
It is really neat to look at those hills and recognize them in some of the old movies. I lived in the '80's in Simi Valley. There, I looked out my bedroom window at the same rock formation that John Wayne's 'Three Mesquiteers' and other westerns took place in back when it was called Corriganville.
