Restaurant and its jazz club - combined or separate web properties? Mon, 08/1/11 8:04 PM (permalink)
[Helpful answer received] / [List Solutions Only]
I've been given the task of updating the website for our restaurant, which within it has a separate jazz club, in its own room, for an additional entrance fee.

Both places enhance and promote one other.

There's only one (poor) website at the moment that provides all details, such as the food menu and artist performance calendar.

Should I develop two separate websites, with different domain names i.e. www.MannysItalian.com & www.JazzAtMannys.com (fictitious names) and link each site to the other?

If I take this route, there will be some repeated content, such as the location page (though the food menu is different between the two.)

Or should I contain all content within one site, say like the San Francisco restaurant/jazz club Yoshi's does:

[ Links seem to have been removed but if you visit Yoshis website you will see what I mean. ]

I'm wondering also if the second option of a single domain is better for SEO, as I only have to concentrate and optimize my efforts on a single domain.

I'm also wondering whether the associated internet properties that will be created, such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, should be combined or separate for the restaurant and the club?

Has anybody been in such a position before. I would welcome any insights to aid in my decisions.

Without more info I'd suggest one web site:
Generally, we need more info such as:
What's the name of your place?
    What's your web site URL?
What part of the business drives the greater volume and profit?
(That's the one you want to feature.)
Does you business name incorporate both business segments?
    What does your menu include?
What kind of music do you feature?
    Give us more SPECIFIC details.
Here's 2 examples in the PHX area:
    http://www.warrenjazzbistro.com/ 50/50 mix
    http://www.rhythmroom.com/ 95 music/5 food

Ok... here's some advice from someone who has designed web sites for a living in the past (and still designs them occasionally for extra money, especially in the off-season)...

Before making this decision, imagine a group of your potential customers driving around in their car, ok? Imagine them having a discussion about going to your jazz club. They want to know who is performing, so one of them pulls out their iPhone, opens safari, and types into the search bar.

The question that you have to answer is, what is that person typing? That is to say, what are your customers and potential customers searching for? Only you can answer that question, but my gut instinct is to say they'll be searching for the restaurant name, not the jazz club. But maybe I'm wrong.

My gut instinct is that you have two businesses, but the second business is inside the first. So if you've only got one physical real-world store-front serving both, my recommendation would be to have one virtual on-line store-front into both.

But, as I said, that's a blind opinion without knowing your business or the iffy-gritty details of how you operate. I may be making bad assumptions. Only you can decide.
