Restaurant of The Day 6/19/09 Shiek's - Torrington, CT

I grew up in Winsted, which is one town North of Torrington. But I have never been to Shiek's. There is a deli less than a mile away called Salerno's that I have talked about on Roadfood previously. I'm just hoping to get some opinions on Shiek's. Every time that I'm back in the area, I try to eat at Salerno's. I just want to know if it is worth going somewhere else this weekend when I'm home for father's day.

Yeah, I've actually looked it up on here before. I believe that was one of the first ways I found roadfood.com.

Hmmmm Braunstein, my husband also grew up in Winsted (me from New Hartford!) so practically neighbors. Haven't made it to Sheik's either, although Tim did years ago and had great feedback. Need to put it on our list of must-tries.

I grew up in Litchfield (just next door) and have been going there for years. I am particularly fond of the sausage grinder with fried peppers and onions. The atmosphere of the place is also a big plus. (friendly and fun) Would definately make the trip.

I grew up in Harwinton and as a kid I looked forward to Saturdays at Sheik's. It's the only day the serve their fantastic hot dogs. They use the left over corned beef special from earlier in the week in their sauerkraut and the chili special becomes a great hot dog topping. Their spicy mustard is great and so is the hot pepper relish they use to make the "Texas Tommy"- a dog with a slice of American cheese, wrapped in bacon and topped with hot pepper relish. We also used to get the ham/salami combo grinder with their house roasted peppers which spoiled me for life- it's the standard I use to measure all roasted peppers. In the 80s the small space next door was opened as a deli and my mom would stop in and buy containers of those awesome peppers. It's VERY small- mostly the reason we got our dogs to go- but a fun place to stop when I am up that way to remember the hot dogs of my childhood.

I stopped at Sheik's last fall on a trip thru CT. I didn't notice it was a "fun place", I was the only customer at 2 PM on a Friday. I got the Roast Beef Sandwich which is what the Sterns had recommended in one of thier books. It was very good, but not necessarily something I would drive 100 miles for. But certainly if you are not far away you should try the place.

I have never gone to either place, but as you know, I live in Bridgeport...I definately must try both of those places. Thanks for the tip. :-D

We were just there (Sheik's) to meet relatives who happened to be there when we called from the car on the way into town. The food was awful (salty, tough, gloppy) and the staff were not fun. Don't freakin' go! There's an italian deli less than a mile away (near St. Maron's church and the police station) that is authentic and good, the opposite of this place...
