Wow, a misconception of mine is shattered. Those prices (and menu) would be welcome in Milwaukee. I thought if I visited the Big Apple I'd need a second home mortgage to afford to stay and eat there. Now it's just a small loan to find reasonable lodging and maybe we'll visit some day.

New York has lots of inexpensive restaurants with great food.
Try the Eastern European restaurants on the Lower East Side.
There also used to be some great cheap food on Columbus in the 60's and 70's.

Keep in mind that those are the takeout menu items.

The sitdown menu is a bit more expensive, but still affordable...

The cheap Eastern European eats are still around for the most part(Old stand-bys like Kiev and the 2nd Avenue Deli are long gone), but you would be very disappointed if you came back to NY and sought out cheap eats ANYWHERE on the Upper West Side. I think it may possibly be the most expensive neigborhood in the entire country in terms of housing, restaurants and shopping. Aside from Lincoln Center, the Avenues are nearly unrecognizable compared to just 10 years ago. I recently re-watched "The Apartment" from 1960. I got a huge kick out of seeing the UWS from back in the day when it was an affordable wroking-class community.

Officials close biker bar for 72 hours after outbreak of illness

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -- Health officials ordered the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que to close on Thursday for at least 72 hours after investigating scores of reports of gastrointestinal illnesses associated with patrons who ate at the popular biker bar and restaurant.

Onondaga County Health Commissioner Cynthia B. Morrow said late Thursday afternoon the health department had received reports of around 270 people, including some employees, who had become sick since eating at the Dinosaur over the weekend.

The source of the illness was under investigation and laboratory studies were pending. Morrow said it likely was related to a viral illness. The most common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps and chills lasting 12-48 hours. No specific foods have been implicated.

An inspection of the facility did not reveal a source for the outbreak.

It's so bad it made the Drudge Report

"More than 600 report illness related to Dinosaur Bar-B-Que

"The number of illnesses connected to the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in Syracuse is now up to more than 600. Initial complaints came from people who ate at the restaurant either last Friday or Saturday night. But now, people who ate leftovers taken from the Dinosaur on those nights and others who may have come into contact with those that were ill are coming forward"

The sad part here is that no one is mentioning that the same symptoms swept through this area during that same period. I know of 50 people in Ithaca, myself included, that had the same illness. I know of no cases where those symptoms were Dinosuar related. The county was overly cautious, as they should have been, but I think we'll find in the end that the restaurant's only fault was being too damned delicious and popular.
