When did you stop loving Pamela's? Wouldn't that be almost as bad if you stopped loving Primanti's?

Why are you surprised at the Brat House?- that was one of the best brats I ever had- and I love the fact that I was able to get cheese curds as a side, although admittedly I did enjoy the ones at the Old Fashioned in Madison even more the following day, although I didn't enjoy the brats as much.

I think I have contributed four reviews of places that have been "added" to Roadfood and show up in the map and search results. I keep my own mental "Secret Roadfood" of places that are too good or too special to be on Roadfood. Other people can't have them, they're mine.

Of course there's always Dee's Diner outside of Nelsonville, Ohio. It must be Roadfood as it's right along the road. And the burgers are really, um, burgers. The Swiss steak is a hamburger patty. Oh, and there's a big cross-cut saw on the wall. And as I said, it's right along the road.

mayor al

Agree with all of the above, at least those I have been to... and add FREDDIES Pizza/Deli, Berwyn, IL, a great place for a RF meeting and lunch
Al, if it's the place that ChiTownDiner took Mariton and I to, then we could not agree more.  Everything there was truly outstanding!  Chris & Amy did review it a couple of years ago.

A couple that I would add to the list are:
Jack's in Wyantskill, NY
Ted's fish fry in Watervielt, NY

Some more come to mind
The Chuckwagon in Ellington, CT
Gus & Paul's in Springield MA
The Town Tavern in Averill Park, NY
Kay 's on Burden Lake in Averill Park, NY

I just added a few places that I completely forgot about in Albany NY.
One thing you won't find on my list are  food carts and food trucks- I'm just not a big fan....
You will find lots of small town cafes, old school taverns and family restaurants - all the places that the hipsters love to hate...

Dale-my surprise about the Brat House was based on being a brat snob-we make our own-always have. So my thought was-a restaurant in Milwaukee when you can get a brat everywhere? Anyway- ate there recently and it was awesome.

Ann,

It seemed every other restaurant in Milwaukee has brats on the menu...What I really liked about The Milwaukee Brat House (besides offering cheese curds as a side) is they serve Usinger Brats, the pretzel  rolls that they use go perfectly with the brats and you can get both grilled onions and kraut, plus the german mustard AND stadium sauce!

Edit- to add Crouse Cafe  in Indianola IA to my 2010 list. I could have sworn that Ayersian did a review of this place which is why I didn't add it (how else would I have known about it?) Well, it appears they didn't do one...so here it is...

The Wild Onion closed and The Pie Place Cafe took over the space at the Harbor Inn in Grand Marais, MN. The Pie Place used to be out on the highway west of town about a mile. In many ways it is a net improvement in the space but is one less mighty fine restaurant.

Thanks Davydd,

That's a real shame about The Wild Onion
I will remove the Wild Onion from my list

I still like Pamela's just fine, but find myself much more drawn to blue-collar, urban hash houses like Gab N Eat, DeLuca's and the late, great Jo-Jo's.  And I will never stop loving Primanti's!!!

We're meeting my grandson for lunch. He'll probably eat two of those sandwiches. Me, more than likely a pastrami and cheese monster. I never know what lleechef's going to have. Probably something with fries on it.

How about any place on the Hill in Saint Louis.

I would suggest Adriana's or Gioia's as fitting the Roadfood theme.  A Mary's Special from Adriana's sounds really good right now.

I probably get more "tips" from the Forums than I do from the Reviews.  Here's one that "rocked my world": http://www.breezyheightstavern.com/ .

I "discovered" it from a 2003 post by Californyguy who, 7 years later, started a thread on it:  http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/tm.aspx?Breezy-Heights-Tavern-Avella-PA&m=446540&high=breezy+heights&mpage=2 .

Thanks to buffetbuster's pics, I just HAD to visit!

I'm surprised that your list doesn't include any Teryaki joints.... When I was in  LA back in 2009 I've never seen such a huge concentration of them compared to other west coast cities- - I would say they even outnumbered the burger and taco joints at least 5-1.
I know wheregreggeats has mentioned he's seen a large concentration in Seattle, I was surprised because when I lived in Seattle  they were as few but not that many, when I returned to Seattle in May  I was convinced that Seattle had nothing on LA...
I had been to the Apple Pan, the burger was very ordinary but the banana cream pie was amazing. Zankou Chicken didn't impress me at all.

I don't really consider teriyaki Roadfood, I guess. It's usually overly sweet and the one promising place gave me food poisoning.

I am shocked Zankou did not change your life. The garlic sauce is like crack for Angelinos.

If the teriyaki joints (the plethora of them that appear to be all over la la land) aren't Roadfood then I don't know what is

I guess I didn't think much of Zankou Chicken because I can get basically the same stuff right here in Rhode Island- I guess it was just "no big whoop" for me....

Daichan was quite good when I visited 4 years ago (perhaps you can do a restaurant review here on Roadfood). From all of my travels around the US it is very obvious that LA has the largest concentration, the most diverse and the best Japanese and Japanese-American style restaurants in the country.
