Reubens or Cubans?

Someone asked me today which sandwich I prefer, and I had a difficult time answering. I love both of these sandwiches, but it depends on the mood I'm in to be able to choose one properly!

Since I can't get a real Cuban here in Austin, right now I'd pick that. I've ALWAYS loved Ruebens, though, and we have a Katz's here (among other great ones).

Err, I don't like sauerkraut or thousand island dressing, so make mine a Cuban.

    Just not Mark Cuban :-)

Cuban, if only because you don't have to eat it with a knife and fork.

I'm answering my own post. Marchand's Grille serves up an interesting Florida twist on the reuben - it's a grouper reuben, with the fish subbing for the corned beef. It's very good, but definite fork 'n' knife fare.

I guess given the choice, I would opt for the mainstream version.

I agree. If the choice would have included a lobster roll, it would be a no brainer but as it stands it is a hard choice............guess that I have to go with the Rueben!" />

The Sub shop where I get my Reubens offers a hot german mustard instead on Thousand Island dressing on the sandwiches. This is what I choose as I do not like Thousand Island Dressing either. ( My husband thinks there is no other dresssing besides Thousand Island

I can get the best Cuban right down the street here in Key West at the 5 Brothers Grocery or the Cuban Deli at the laundromat. But I have to go a long way to get a Rueben. Miami is a long drive!! I can remember a great one when I lived in Indianapolis at Shapiro's Deli. Real sloppy with lots of corned beef.Am now slobbering over keyboard...

I was at Treasure Island, Florida this week-end and had my first Cuban. And it was very good. Next time in Florida I will be looking for a true Cuban roadfood place. My vote is for the Cuban.

What would a cuban-reuben be like? Sauerkraut with fried plantains? Palm hearts marinated in thousand Island? Maybe you've created a new franchise opportunity:

Can someone mail me a Cuban sandwich? We don't seem to have many Cubans in Kansas who demand a ready source of those wonderful sandwiches. I prefer my Reuben with spicy brown mustard, and if I'm making them at home, I substitute turkey pastrami for the corned beef (yes, I know -- a heresy, but tasty nonetheless...)

I don’t really know what a Cuban is, but I was wondering if anyone has ever been to Ma Sparrows in New Orleans. They have the best Reuben and the best pastrami sandwiches! I’ve been there a few times – even have a tee shirt with their logo. I just can’t find them by name and address for an upcoming visit . . . I know it is just a block or two from Bourbon or Decatur . . . Any help??

    It's too hard to choose!!!

I'ts harder to make a top notch cuban than a great reuben, though, so my vote goes for the cuban. great with a beer and some football.

I lean towards the Cuban (but in each case, Cuban or Ruben, it has to be a good one, with good ingredients.)

Speaking of Cuban's, if you have a Publix market near you, their deli make a decent one. All nice & pressed and with Boar's Head Meats. I think my last one was only $6.50 or so plus tax.

What am I missing here gang? Why do we feel the need to choose? Why are we choosing between these two particular sandwiches? Is it because they rhyme? Other than that, as far as I know, they have nothing in common other than they both fill the basic requirements needed to qualify as a "sandwich".

Or maybe it's because we're all in a silly mood and this suits our needs quite nicely.

Help me to understand, I'm only trying to learn...

OK. You are right. Let's talk about lutefisk sandwiches from now on...

    bobojay-

There's a place going in at Legends by the Speedway called Caliente Cuban. Hopefully, they'll have Cubans. I haven't had a good Cuban since I was in Tampa last summer and took the trolley over to Ybor City.

I make Cubans at home with my panini press, but I can't find the sliced roasst pork anywhere around here, so I use two types of ham.
