Ribs at Uncle Julios Hacienda (Chicago)

Has anybody had these wonderful smokey morsels? Ribs at a mexican place??? I cannot speak for the rest of the food on the menu but the ribs and stuffed shrimp are delicious. The ribs are prepared using a dry rub and come w/o sauce on them, the way I like them best. A small dish of a thick tomato-ey sauce is served with them, but that is better slathered on the soft flour tortillas instead of the ribs. I admit that I am no BBQ expert but y'all got to try these out. Outstanding!

There is another Hacienda in Lombard at the intersection of 22nd and Meyers Road, near P.F. Changs and Galyan's Sporting Goods.

Can't speak for the ribs, but what I've had there is pretty average chain-type Mexican. The one in North Avenue is pretty crowded in the summer time, especially with the outdoor seating.

I ate at the Lombard location myself and from what I could see of the other menu items, they did in fact look pretty "average" like saps said. We are very fortunate here in Chicagoland to have a very large Mexican community and loads of excellent Mexican restaurants. I usually steer clear of places like the Hacienda and my friends consider me to be quite the Mexican food snob...but like I said, this one was a suprise! Hmmm...I am sensing another topic for a different forum.

Oddly enough, I went to Cheeseburger in Paradise down the street expecting to hate it- the burgers were OK, the Cuban pork sandwich was actually very good, and they had really good, fall-of-the-bone tender BBQ ribs. Not really any smoke flavor to them, but they were very good nonetheless.

Funny thing is I ended up at the Hacienda because Cheeseburger was so darn crowded. I work about 2 blocks from Cheeseburger and get stuck eating along the Butterfield "food corridor" a lot. I finally got in to Cheeseburger and was actually very impressed with the pork items also.

Been to both Hacienda and Cheeseburger a couple of times. I love the stuffed shrimp at Hacienda, have had that a couple of times there and the one on North Avenue in the city. The rest of the menu is a definite step up from any other "chain" mexican place, but not at the level of a first-rate mexican place. Cheeseburger is good, have not had a bad meal there and the margaritas are very good.

I've only been to this place once, and don't recommend it. Awful service and mediocre food.
