Riese replaces Dunkin Donuts with Tim Horton's in NYC

Food Court operator Riese replaced its 12 Dunkin Donuts franchises with Tim Horton's donut franchises in a flash cut last weekend. Dunkin has been trying to dump Riese as a franchisee for years. The NY Post had about the best coverage, probably because they were the ones who ran the photo of a mouse eating a Dunkin Donut in a store window, which kicked off the Dunkin de-frocking effort. http://www.nypost.com/seven/07102009/news/regionalnews/doughnut_wars__178556.htm

Going from Dunkin Donuts to Tim Horton's is definitely a step or two up food's evolutionary ladder.

I'm originally from the city where Tim Hortons started and I'm glad I'm in Texas, far from any of their stores.

I've had both (although not recently) and fail to see any serious distinction between the two. Both sell corporate donuts in varying flavors and sizes. Both sell coffee and coffee concoctions. Neither are engaged in the business of creating food in their stores. I do hear buzz about their "iced cappuccino" being good, but from what I've seen, it looks like every other giant plastic cup filled with ice and a tan coffee beverage. I may try one today to see what the buzz is about.

While I don't eat donuts, I do remember Tim when he was with the Sabres being a much better player than Duncan.

I stopped in at the Riese-operated store at 86th Street and Lexington Ave, NYC today. While they had a total variety of 30 baked items, they only had 12 different varieties of donuts. They had a filled donut called Canadian Maple which I really liked the flavor of. The filling was the usual vanilla pudding. However, instead of a chocolate or iced frosting, they had a maple-flavored frosting. But on average, I agree with Pigiron that there is no serious distinction between Dunkin Donuts and Tim Hortons. Dunkin customers may want to patronize Hortons to get a break from the samo samo.

Stopped in to the Tim Horton's on 42nd by Grand Central out of pure curiosity. This location is nothing more than a stall inside a KFC. I read on some blog somewhere that their iced cappuccino was good. Well, is was not good. It was also not iced, nor was it cappuccino. It's garbage junk food out of a slurpee machine. For some reason I thought Tim Horton's was more of an upscale place that specialized in good coffee. I was mistaken. I really don't see any difference between them and Dunkin Donuts (which is also garbage junk food in my opinion). Oh well.

There are Tim Horton's EVERYWHERE here and I can honestly say I have stepped foot in one once, it didn't wow me plus they sell Tim Horton's donuts back home in N.Ireland and I didn't find them to be anything special. Not being a coffee drinker I can't comment on that but I much preferred the muffins and hot chocolate from Dunkin Donuts.
