Risque Donuts

Anyone remember a place near the Ft Lauderdale, FL airport called Risque Donuts? Quite a unique establishment to say the least.

I've heard of it; my boyfriend went to Fort Lauderdale right when he graduated highschool, with a friend and the friend's sister and her husband who were older. The brother-in-law shocked them by taking them in that place; quite the experience for two 18 year olds (yeah, that was 25 years ago. Today's kids wouldn't think anything of it, i'm sure!)

This posting reminds me of the old joke whose punch line was "well, if you think that's disgusting, then you should be around when he makes the donuts".

If anyone needs to know what led up to that punch line, I will be glad to supply those details!

I've posted this before, and the whole Mart is getting shut down, so the place might not be there any more, but the Pennsauken Mart in South Jersey had a candy shop that made pornographic chocolates. To the point that they covered the case with the chocolates and would not open it for customers under the age of 18.

The "Mart" was a weekly destination before we moved and the kids were younger. First stop was always the pretzel shop then a clockwise walk around with the kids exploring almost every "stall", multipul small purchases with the final being pizza by the autoparts shop. The Italian Deli was a good place for large inexpensive hoagies and was one of the few places open when the rest of the mart was closed. Three years ago we were in so.jersey for a family reunion and the "Mart" was a MUST stop, the pretzel shop was unfortunately closed for vacation and perhaps it was a little dingier than I remembered and the kids significant others couldn't see the attraction but it was still entertaining. My first job 30+ years ago was at the "mart" and the rumours about its eminate demise were rife even then.

The Pennsauken Mart pretzel shop made, well, without qualification, the best soft Philly pretzels in the whole world. There ya' go. All respect to the derelict guys on the street corners, who who sold from the Frankford Bakery, who also were part of making Philly pretzels great. But the shop in the Pennauken Mart was the best.

I don't remember the name of the donut shop in Dalton, GA, could have been Risque, but the slogan was, "Donuts so fresh you'll slap them".

Street corner pretzels!! 5 for a dollar..you barely had to slow down to grab a snack icon sofy and chewy even when cold, often seasoned slightly with exhaust... aaahh the Philly soft pretzel... on the aforementioned roadtrip we had a 3 car convoy and at each stop (8 ladies, lots of stops in 900 miles)the talk was about pretzels.. get to Philly and NO street pretzels!! Pennsauken Mart..NO pretzels!! You would think the return trip would be full of discussions about the 300 or so relatives you had never known or the trip to the liberty bell or the franklin institute, museum of natural history or even the statue of a far removed ancestor atop city hall, but noooooooo... a few weeks later dad came through with a surprise ups delivery,a real treat, even without the tang of car exhaust

I used to buy them 6 for a dollar and would bring a bag or two, along with some Tasty Cakes back to Cincinnati as if I had been on a journey to the far East.

The Risque Donuts I was referring to near the Ft. Lauderdale airport was in business in the middle-late 1980's and featured topless waitresses. Other than that, it was pretty much a standard donut shop with the windows all painted black. Donuts and coffee were pretty good!

I always support any politically incorrect establishment, regardless of quality or genre as we all should.

Neat thing about Rique, was that if you didn't notice the unique nature of their "double donut" sign, you would never have an inkling of the details inside before you actually opened the door.

There used to be a similar place in Colorado called "Debbie does Donuts".

That got a lot of "coverage" in the press back then......
Never went there, as I could care less about topless women or bottomless women serving doughnuts..
I Dont eat doughnuts on a regular basis anyway...
