Road food and road trips

Anyone else think the criticism of AB's new show "Feasting on Asphalt" is unwarranted? Like other posters (I'm new here, just reviewed this thread) I like AB and like the open Southern charm of Paula and her boys.

Since I heard about the Rachel Ray drinking game, I confess I can't watch her without thinking about her annoying idiosyncracies. Someone could get blotto drinking to mine, I assure you. And, I think she's never professed to be a culinary artist, just a hard working person who loves to eat and to feed people. That's okay by me.

Also wanted to share a road food blog with people here. Just found out about it and I love it. It's called http://cheesebyhand.com - they're going from state to state visiting artisanal cheese makers. Great stuff.

Anyway, I just posted in my blog and noted this site. I only discovered it tonight so I hope you'll check in, comment, whatever!

Welcome to Roadfood.com. There is a thread with several entries already in progress in the Misc. Food Related Forum down the forum page a bit. I suggest that you take a look at it, as I think you will find several folks who are in agreement that Alton Browns's Travel program is a step up from the recent efforts on the part of some of the other Food network regulars.

I hope you will enjoy visiting Roadfood.com and adding to the quality of the site when you can.

You've touched me in a good spot. I'm a real fan of AB. Between him or Jimmy Buffett I'd have a hard time choosing which I'd want to come back as. I am totally enjoying "Feasting On Asphalt" and all his stops along the way. What better way could there be to explore roadfood culinaria and enjoy the trip than on 2 wheels I'll go check the other forum but I wanted to let you know I'm with ya'.

There are a lot of posters here who seen to be polarized to the negative. I don't know why and I can't explain it. Anybody who is happy/chipper = BAD ... I FastForward past the people who always have something bad to say ... "I hate her because she's chipper" ... "I hate her because she smiles and says [the same thing] all the time" ... sometimes I think they should watch Gene Scott reruns.

ANYHOW ... I ahve only seen 2 AB roadtrip shows and I CHOSE to watch them to their conclusion ... I could have defaulted to CNN, TV Land, Etc. ... but, I didn't ... if I watch a show to the end, I am not credentialed to dis it.

Roadfood and road trips. Birmingham, NOLA, SoCAL, Pittsburgh, Gulfport, Boston, on and on...and then there were all the Roadfood folks that came to Alaska that we love!

Remember back in the days when TV food shows were about food and cooking? And not the personality? Well. . . there does seem to be some discussion about Rachel's and Paula's food.

Rachel Ray is being morphed into, what, her fifth show in four years? And the Food Network is recycling all their regulars in new shows? And there is Iron Chef America. At least the Alton Brown show is something original and not formula scripted.

Must be about the money; the cookbooks and cookwear and specialty food lables and such. Merchandising and selling TV advertising. Food Network. . . did I mention TV advertising?

Anyway. That's my rant.

I'm a traditionalist. Back to developing my Julia Child drinking game.

First, welcome aboard! When I was in college (quite a long time ago - before the invention of the George Foreman grill, so a looong time ago)my roomate and I had a pinup poster of Julia in our dorm room. We made her coq au vin a time or two and one of the recipients of this largesse ended up as my wife. The thing I like about AB, similarly to Julia, is that they both have fun with food. Feeding someone a really terrific meal is not the same as finding a cure for cancer. Neither of them treat it that way and I like that. Julia used to drop food on the floor all the time when taping her show. She'd pick it up, wipe it off with her "impeccably clean towel" and put it back in the pan. That's my kind of cook/chef (unless I am eating in their restaurant!). By the way, my feelings for Julia were all totally innocent. Now Sara Moulton, well that's another story. Any man who could watch her cook her herbed rack of lamb and not be moved, well, he's made of ice! Fred

Don't know how this turned into a Julia thread but I'll have to put my 2 cents in here. She was an icon. She was incredibly humble. She was an immaculate hostess. She was hilarious. She was a fine chef. I ate at her home in Cambridge, MA many times, that lovely kitchen that is now in the Smithsonian. Julia always treated you like a neighbor that just popped in for tea. Julia was well, just Julia. La Grande Dame de la Cuisine.

Jacqueline - Welcome to RF. I too, agree about the flogging of Food Network personalities. As stated many times before, we are not forced to watch them. When I am channel surfing and I come across a show I don't like (such as Emril), I surf on by (my choice, my remote (well, most of the time), and my TV.
I watched Alton Brown this weekend, and though it is not my favorite, I found it entertaining and as always informational. I use to love to watch Sara Moulton.
As anyone seen "Take Home Chef" on TLC? He's a cutie, but it reminds me so much of Doorknock Dinners of the past?

I learned how to cook well from Julia...I still think her way of making a ribeye is the best..Heat up a saute pan, cut a bit of fat off the steak and throw in the pan to coat it, put the steak in-3 minutes each side and voila!!
