What is your route? Will you be going down I-55 or US 61/82/49? I can help a little either way. If time is not a consideration, 61 all the way to Vicksburg and across I-20 to Jackson is fun, too.

Using Hiway 61 (The River Road) not I-55 you will pass the Blue & White diner in Tunica (and all the casinos there)..Then Clarksville Clarksdale and Greenville with a number of old Roadfood places in and around them. Don't skip DOES Eat Place in Greenville. I promise there is nothing like it in California !!!!!!! Check the Mississippi list in the restaurant index here on Roadfood for the places that will fit your travel plans. Enjoy !!

This is just outside Memphis in hernando but the best Mexican food in the state. it is La Fiesta. Get off the Herando exit and go towards town. It is on the right at the road to Kroger.

Sorry folks, it is la Siesta. the La Siesta Chalupa is the best you will find anywhere and so is the salsa.

Since you are starting in Memphis, a few recommendations there: Gus Fried Chicken Dyer's Hamburger's Interstate BBQ Topps BBQ Barksdale Resteraunt Cafe Ole (Bacon wrapped shrimp!)

If you're traveling Hwy. 78 south from Memphis instead of taking the western route, you should try The Friendship House. It's out from Aberdeen, Mississippi. If you like catfish, you must try the the whole fried catfish. The restaurant is a little way from town, but you won't find better fish and the fixings, and the people are so friendly and hospitable. They also have other seafood and steaks, etc.

Memphis to Jackson trip but you should take enough time to go through Oxford, Clarksdale, Greenwood, Greenville and on to Jackson as you may never do it again. Go down I 55 to Oxford first and spend the night at 512 Van Buren B&B. Walk up to the Square for drinks at City Grocery, Waltz, Downtown Grill, etc. Have dinner at City Grocery owned by John Currence who just won a JB award this year. Visit William Faulkner's home and The University of Mississippi home of the most beautiful ladies in America. City Grocery @ 152 Courthouse Square, Oxford, MS. 662 - 232 - 8080. Go west to Clarksdale, MS and have lunch at Ground Zero owned by Actor Morgan Freeman, Abe's BBQ, Hick's BBQ or Ranchero. Head south to Greenwood and spend the night at The Alluvian Hotel owned by Viking Range Co. Abe's BBQ @ 616 State St., Clarksdale, MS 662 - 624 - 9947. * Ground Zero Blues Club @ Blues Alley, Clarksdale, MS 662 - 621 - 9009. * The Ranchero @ 1907 State St., Clarksdale, MS 662 - 624 - 9768. * Have dinner at Giardinia's in the hotel or Lusco's. Get a massage. Go to Viking's cooking classes. Crystal Grill @ 423 Carrollton Ave.,Greenwood, MS 662 - 453 - 6530. * Giardinia's @ 314 Howard St., Greenwood, MS 662 - 455 - 4227. Lusco's @ 722 Carrollton Ave., Greenwood, MS 662 - 453 - 5365. If you can visit Greenville 35 miles to the west and have dinner at Doe's Steak House. When you get to Jackson check into your hotel and rest up then go to Nick's for dinner.
