In Gulf Shores, try the Original Oyster House for seafood - we always get the catch of the day blackened. In Orange Beach, go to the Bayside Grill; they always have daily specials which are pretty good and well-priced. They've been a little uneven the last couple of times we were there, though. For pizza and huge, sweet sticky buns, try the Old World Bakery on West Beach in Gulf Shores.

Hey, good luck traveling down here. Came to Gulf Shores from Cleveland on vacation 11 years ago this month and ended up moving here four months later. There are a lot of good places to eat - more every week it seems like. Lulu's just opened - on the water by the bridge. Lulu is Jimmy Buffet's sister and he will appear unexpectedly to perform. Her place used to be up the road a bit and he would drop in there. Food good, ambiance fantastic. Steamers has great steamed seafood. Nothing fried. Down to earth - each table gets a roll of paper towels as their napkins and a plastic bucket to put shells in. Nothing fancy at all, just good food. For do it yourself seafood Billy's Seafood has the best and freshest. Caught off their boats that morning!

I'm sure you've seen http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=159. Someone recommends The Big Easy - been there, their jambalaya is okay, I'd go back, and they offer footlong corn dogs for the kids. A better place, if you can't wait 'til you get to New Orleans, is in Fairhope on Mobile Bay. It's a little place on Church Street, the Gumbo Shack. They pretty much only serve gumbo, red beans and rice, Zapp's potato chips, and beer by the bottle. Good stuff! (And Fairhope is a very picturesque town with a neat history, it was started as a Utopian village by a group of Midwesterners with the purpose of demonstrating the economic principle of a single tax.) Happy travels!

Gulf Shores Debriefing. The Fish Factory is closed, maybe for good. The Original Oyster House served adequate food at best. But folks,do eat at Fishbonz which is now open seven days. Really great food at moderate prices with good local bands playing. Again, thanks to all who made rec's for my trip. Postdoc
