Roadfood by Mail Order

While my travels have been a little limited, i have been able to buy trudy some roadfood anniversary and birthday gifts by mail order. The Sterns mentioned the Enstrom Candy company of Grand Junction, Colorado as a source for world class chocolate almond toffee. And they were right. The milk chocolate is sweet but not sickeningly so and the crunch is satisfying but not tooth breaking. the entire chips family approved and thinks this is one of the great taste treats ever. The Cranberry Island company of Cumberland, Maine sent us our first Whoopee Pies and they were sensational, rich in their chocolate flavor with the cream and cake fillings a delight. Again a taste treat. It is nice to experience roadfood even if i can't get everywhere i would like.

Good for you, mr chips for finding a way to enjoy these Roadfood treats. I have mail ordered Enstrom's in the past and it is every bit as good as you say!

Jim, When we can't get up to Wisconsin, we can order some of the Sprechers Cherry Cola we like so much, from their website. Shipping costs are fairly high, but if we have a craving a little cost won't stop us. We have also done some BBQ orders from Places like Carson's in Chicago to keep that wonderful BBQ taste within memory. Wish Tillamook Creamery could ship some of their Ice Cream !! Cheese, we got, but We love their Ice Cream too! Lots of the RF places do mail-order..and to para-phrase..it's the next-best thing to being there !

Another good one, with a fairly reasonable shipping...at least for food items...is Hahn's Crumb Cake I am lucky to leave nearby and hit their "factory store"...which is a table and rack in lobby of their baking plant. I have encountered the owner on several occasions and she is the absolute sweetest and nicest woman out there. The kind it makes you feel glad to give your money to!

This is a great thing to bring up Mr. Chips! I to, can not get around the country as much as I used to. Great to be able to order Roadfood stuff delivered! Alligator Sausage on a Stick, that I hope is still served at Central Market in New Orleans, can be ordered from cajungrocer.com. They also have Muffalata olive relish for making those great N.O. sandwiches. Who else has some great Roadfood that you can order delivered? Joe

I had some of the best pierogies ever this week while in Cleveland, OH. I went to a Wednesday night fest near the art museum and discovered Posh Pierogies. www.poshpierogies.com Mother & daughter who make over 700 pierogies/day and ship all over the country.

mar52 I get my Cajun Boudin fix from Poches or the Cajun Grocer a couple times a year. Good stuff! I've heard many good things about the Cajun Grocer but have never ordered from them. Poches is simply outstanding. My usual 10 lb. order is a mixture of boudin, andouille, and tasso. Am planning on a turducken for this winter, have you ever tried one?

I have tried turducken. I think I made the mistake of buying the one I tried from Costco. It was in the frozen section and it was quite salty to the point of my not being able to eat it. I love The Cajun Grocer and have a hard time disposing of those wonderful styrofoam containers in which they ship. I know that I'll have a use for them at some point and they take up so much room! I just can't throw them out.

About 20 years ago I went on a binge and mail-ordered from probably 25 local food sources, working from a great book called "Food Finds" (My kids were lttle, we weren't gettng out much...) It was great fun getting something new in the mail practically every day. (Worst packaging ever: Blenheim Ginger Ale, but somehow it arrived intact with no broken bottles). It looks like the book has not been updated since 2000, but still might be useful as a reference. http://www.amazon.com/Food-Finds-Americas-People-Produce/dp/0060958375

Ken, At one of the RF Crabfest get-togethers in Baltimore a few years ago, one of the Food Find authors attended and donated several copies of the book to the Door-Prize basket. I have found that it is a real treasure for sources of 'foody-mailorder'! The TV series of the same name is currently rerunning (again) during the day on the Travel Channel -Noon to 1 PM EDT..

That's just it, Don. Not everyone can travel around the country enjoying the food treats that aren't available in all parts of the country. This way we can eat Roadfood treats in our own homes.

No problem. I just thought the thread would be about ordering food from Roadfood restaurants, like getting mustard from Phillipe's, etc.

All the places I've ordered from have been mentioned in the Sterns' "500 Things to Eat Before It's Too Late" so I've had no problem counting them on my roadfood list.

Don, if a Gator Sausage on a Stick, from Central Market in N.O. is not roadfood then... If you don't get to the market and just order some from Cajungrocer then... I sure wish they could freeze those Muffalettas from Central Grocery! At least they have an olive relish that is close to the real thing. :~)

Mar, yaa... to bad the don't freeze well. I never tried but... But, if you have the olive relish you can kinda come close at home. Lotsa of stuff yall have mentioned sounds good! Oh, a place called Woody's Smokehouse, on the way from Dallas to Houston, in Centerville Texas ships. Their parking lot on I-45 is always full. Great Jerky, and Beef, Pork, Buffalo (I think it's Bison), Elk, and Venison Stix. The stix are my fav. They make all kinds of meats, cheeses, and jared things. My friend is hooked on their pickled garlic cloves. Shipping is not so bad if you order a few things. Joe

PapaJoe, I bought a bottle of the olive salad the last time I was there and it's just not the same. It's also the bread, all the different meats and the fact that it's in New Orleans.

Don't get around much anymore was sung by Nat King Cole... The shipping cost of roadfood by mail order type items is not so expensive most items are cost prohibitive? I might need to look into the mail order possibility if the shipping costs are not cost prohibitive,as I don't get around much anymore either at least some of the time.....

A couple other places I ordered from earlier in the year. The Idaho Spud Bar is a marshmallow and chocolate candy made by the Idaho Candy Company of Boise, Idaho and mentioned by Jane and Michael Stern in their 500 Things To Eat book. I liked the taste but was not overwhemed by it. i much preferred the twin bing, two lumps of cherry flavored nougat and nuts that are very sweet, not gourmet, but a lot of fun. I bought them by mail order from the Palmer Candy Shoppe in Sioux City, Iowa , another Stern's recommendation from the 500 Things book.
