In the Sunday Dr. Gridlock column of The Washington Post (news, advice and complaints about DC's horrendous traffic), columnist Ron Shaffer mentions a few alternatives to fast food chains:

Maryland Rt. 15 between Frederick, MD & Gettysburg, PA at the Thurmont exit: Mountain Gate & Cozy.

I-85, exit 39 (He only says between Richmond and Raleigh - not very specific): The Nottoway Inn.

I-95, exit 54, Temple Ave. in the Petersburg area: An Arbys (!!!) that is "unlike any fast food place I've ever seen." Has a buffet, table service and apparently, non-Arby-like decor.

I-78, exit 23, Shartlesville, between Harrisburg & Allentown: The Haags Hotel.

He also mentions the Roadfood website.

If you go to Mountain Gate, don't leave without a stop at their gift shop on the 2nd floor, particularly if you have children in tow.

Haag's Hotel now has a website:
      http://www.haagshotel.com/
Their menu is very authentic PA Dutch cooking and would fit the definition of Roadfood in every way.

Janie and I LOVE this place--found it early one am after getting of the hyway LATE one night and spending the night in a not so great motel where the nearest food looked pretty poor so we went in search of better and lo and behold there was Haags! Had a killer breakfast--got some cookies for the trip in to Brooklyn and our daughters and put a much needed positive in the start of the day! On the way home we decided to spend the night there---got in late afternoon--got a room--actually TWO with our choice of beds and spent a pleasant warm cozy winter night after a fabulous dinner--ate it all!! Had a lighter breakfast of scapple and eggs, toast and jam--not the full all you can eat deal of our last visit-not after the last nights Dinner!---it was great and decent coffee! The employees where terrific-and all had been with Haag's a long time and liked it--as someone who has done the work--thats a good sign for me. We plan of stopping in on our next trip to my daughters--its a good ride to Brooklyn after breakfast from there.

I've eaten at the Mountain Gate and Cozy in Thurmont, Md. several times. I guess I'd have to say I prefer Mountain Gate, by a small margin. On Friday nights Cozy has a seafood buffett that is pretty good.
