Roadfood-type shows on Food channel Mon, 03/17/08 12:50 PM (permalink)
My daughter loves to watch these shows on the Food channel, except that then she gets hungry for whatever food they're showing. [:0)] I tell her it's the same for me when I visit these forums!

A few weeks ago, they did a show about Pittsburgh and showed the deli that serves those sandwiches with the fries in the midddle. I told her that roadfooders knew all about that place. More recently, she watched a show where they toured hot dog joints, and when she was telling me about them, I explained that I'd read about most of them on roadfood.com!

Last night, though, she was telling me about a place called "Moms" in Kansas City, but she didn't know whether it was Kansas or Missouri. I tried to see if it was listed here, but couldn't find it. Anyone know of Mom's in KC? My daughter was looking at the omelets there.

Are you sure it wasn't 39th Street Mama's, 3906 Waddell St., Kansas City, Missouri?

Yeah, that's the one, Michael. 39th Street Mama's! And yes, the sandwich place was Primanti's in Pittsburgh, Baah Ben. LOL I couldn't remember the name, and I'll admit that's my age showing. It is amazing, though, how many of the places on those Food Network shows are places I've already read about on roadfood.com.

I know for a fact that several people who work for the food network troll this site for ideas. Many people on the forum have a rub with the channel, but I can't argue about how instrumental they are in keeping many small businesses alive.

I happened to see the show on Mama's and was so impressed, and bummed, that my in-laws have live near KCMO all their lives and didn't know of the place. I can't wait to go there.

Even if HGTV does troll here, and they should, you'd think someone here would have told us about Mama's long before Food Network did. I think it's encouraging that they still find plenty of roadfood places that are new to us here.

The show Diners & Drive-Ins was talking about Mama's 39th Street Diner at 3906 Waddell, recently moved from 39th & Bell into the old Nichols Lunch Building.

The best one is Feasting on Asphalt because he doesnt plan ahead what restaurants he'll be going to just like most people who will be going on long roadtrips

I think Alton Brown from Feasting on Asphalt is my fave Food Network personality. Paula Deen was a guilty pleasure until she had someone on her show blindfold her and feed her pats of butter so she could guess where they came from. That was hardcore jumping the shark right there.

That might have been a ripoff of something Gordon Ramsey was doing on his BBC show, 'The F Word'--he would have wine experts or celebs with vineyard brands come in and he would 'take the piss out of them' by making them blind-taste really expensive stuff next to, like, ripple.

I find that hard to believe. They have to have a plan, a budget and a schedule and that can't be left to chance. The illusion of no plan is probably part of the entertainment.

If you look back a year or so ago, someone from Alton Brown's production staff opened a thread here on Roadfood asking for reccommendations in preparing for that trip.

I wonder if there are plans for another Feasting on Asphalt, and if so, what will the route be.

I would be interested in seeing a tour go through Route 25 or 19. They could start on the Gulf, perhaps Tampa or Mobile and end up in either Toronto. Stops along of the way would be Chattanoga, Knoxville, Charleston, Pittsburgh, Erie and Buffalo.

The next feasting on asphalt should go from Mexico to Canada along a varied west coast route
