    Eskimo Dave,
I have done most of US 50 and US 60 West-East across the USA. What I was pointing out is that there is no INTERSTATE 50 or 60.
In the SoCal area a couple of the freeways (and Tollroads) are number...but they are STATE hiways...(green Triangle shape) most used is/are the 60 and the 91. These are NOT part of the Interstate system.

I find it interesting that there are Interstates in Hawaii...where, obviously the road itself cannot be an "Interstate" (without a verrrry long Bridge to Nowhere at one end) !!

There is a HWY US 50

That figures into it, according to this guy:
Interstate 50: Why there is no Interstate 50

....."So one day, several years ago, I was studying a highway map of the United States and was surprised to find no Interstate 50 anywhere in the country.

"Why is there no Interstate 50?" I asked one of my daughters who was sitting nearby. The question was genuine.

I did not yet know, but found out from subsequent research, that when the new system was imposed on the country, overlaying the old U.S. highway numbering system, it was decided that duplicate numbers from the two highway systems could not co-exist in the same state.

The east-west even numbers of the old U.S. highway systemincrease from north to south (U.S. 30 is farther north than U.S. 50, for example). The east-west even numbers of the new Interstate system decrease from north to south (I-80 is farther north than I-10). The duplication would have become a problem in the middle latitudes of the country, where 50s and 60s could likely run through the same middle states. So, the people who think up these things merely decided never to construct an I-50 or an I-60.

And that is why there is no Interstate 50. Or 60."

Oh!  The 90 that starts in Marina del Rey.  Not an interstate.  I'll have to look at the sign when I go out today.  I rode on it with my car at the time before it was open.  The 90 might be a total of 5 miles... maybe not that much.

I also rode on the I10 (Santa Monica Freeway) before it was open, but that was with my bike.

              Marlene,
The L A area sort of ignores the general rules of numbering the Spurs and Bypass Interstates.
An even numbered 3-digit hiway is supposed to be a 'bypass' leaving the main road, going around something (a city), then rejoining the main route on the other side of town. A good example of this in L A would be the 405. It leaves the 5 at the top of the Valley, follows the coast route, while the 5 goes thru downtown, then rejoins the 5 in Orange County (El Toro). That's the way it is supposed to work.
Howerever, then you have the 210. I leaves the 10 near Loma Linda, and skirts the 'Foothill route' thru Pasadena to join the 5 at the top of the Valley. It never comes close to returning to the 10 on the West-side. It SHOULD be an odd numbered 'Spur' ! Like the 110 (Harbor Freeway) It leaves the 10 at the 4-level downtown and goes to San Pedro...a SPUR that does not rejoin any other freeway.
I am sure many others have been confused by 'mis-labeled' Spurs and Bypasses...but I for One applaude the system as making travel easier and safer than anything we had before. Try driving cross country in any other country as large as the USA and you will gain an appreciation for our Interstate System. IKE did one right in this case.

There's a wonderful story in a National  Geographic from about 30 years ago about a young Col. (Maj.?) Eisenhower leading an Army expedition to map out a military defense highway across the US in about 1919. It turned out to be the genesis  his Interstate system  about 30 years later.

                Cheers, John

I have driven H-1, H-2 and H-3 and I think H-3 is one of the most beautiful drives I have ever taken. The Mountains, the viaduct and the tunnels all in a 15 mile stretch!

I've rode/drove all of Interstates 10 and 40and 24, half of old US 1, all of US 41. There may be other Interstates I've driven the length of but I dont have an Atlas at the moment.

                            BAKED- POTATO,
This may bring back some aches and pains from your I-40 ride... As you begin the eastbound trip, in Barstow, CA where the 40 splits away from the 15, is this sign....I would think many people would change their destinations when faced wiith this !!! I wish I had a photo of the "I-40 Ends" sign in N C.

BTW we lived about 30 miles down the 15 from this sign for many years. I have seen the 'start' and 'end' signs for I-70 and I-65, but have not either noticed or know of actual signage marking other major interstates terminals.

Al, thanks for that 3-digit information on the California highways.  I never knew that.  I looked at the sign on the 90 this morning and it looks like an upside down acorn.  Sort of.
I knew that the odd numbers went north and south and the even numbers went east and west and then there's the 101.

I have driven almost all the interstates end to end, but my quickest end to end trip was I587 in Kingston, NY ---1.21 miles end to end. Took about a minute.

I have also driven end to end on both I84 roads!
