Roads you've driven from end to end Mon, 08/30/10 3:11 PM (permalink)
As I was driving south on I-39 last week it occurred to me that it's a major highway that I've driven completely...not all at once, mind you, but over time.  And while it's not a particularly long highway (Bloomington, IL to Wausau, WI) when compared to some others I think it just might be the only one for which I can make this claim.

It also got me thinking that some people here have probably done the same for various interstates (spurs and 3-digit loops/bypasses excluded) and US highways so I thought I'd ask.  US-66 counts only if it was driven back when it was a commissioned highway!

Just added US-201 to my list on Sunday. I'd need to sit down and figure out how many there have been altogether.

I've probably driven a lot of highways end to end but just haven't kept track. In the last 5 years alone I've driven 58,000 miles in over 40 states in our RV.

The MAJOR Interstates We have done "Start to Finish"...but not necessairily all at one time.

          West to East
          I-8
          I-10
          I-20
          I-30
I-40   All of I-44  and I-64 and I-68 (edit add)
          I-70  All of I-72 and I-74
          Most of I-80
          I-90

          South to North-
          I-5
          I-15
          I-25
          Most of I-29
Most of I-35  ALL of I-39
          I-55
          I-65
          I-69
          I-71
          I-75
          Most of I-77
          Most of I-79
          Most of I-85
          I-81
          I-91
          I-93
          I-94
          90% of I-95
I may be missing some of the shorter Interstates like 78 and 66 (done them both.) I've lost count of the 3 digit highways and bypasses that branch off the various Interstates.
          US HIGHWAYS-
all of US 66, US 101, US 395 and US 93, US 95, US 99, US-89,  (west of the Mississippi)
N-S US Highways US 31,US 41, Most of US 61, about 50% of US 1, more than half of US 77 and US 81/83
OK Enough... Yeah, we have made a lot of cross-country roadtrips!!

I69 and US 101 for sure. Probably some more, I've never really thought about it.

Well I sat down with a pen and paper and came up with these...(not all were driven in one shot)

                  Interstates 4, 26, 66, 78, 81, 84, 88, 91, 95, 97

                  US Hwys 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 17, 20, 83, 92, 201, 206, 301, 302, 340

I had been given a book "Where the Old Roads Go" by George Cantor and set to covering as many as I could.

I just should add that I only covered the eastern end of 2, which is sort of a separate highway from western end even though they have same number.

On many occasions I have driven the entire length of the Pittston by-Pass.  Sometimes in the same day!

I've probably driven the entire length of I-394 over 8,000 times. It could have been more had it existed before 20 years ago.

US 56 ran from US 71 to I-25.
                        The Santa Fe Trail.
                        Wonderful road.

I've done the entire length of US-1, which was a great trip.

                            Interstate-wise, I've done the following:
                            I-35
                            I-10
                            I-20
                            I-8
                            I-89
                            I-91
                            I-93
                            I-44
                            I-59
                            I-94

And several three-digit ones that don't really count.  (I-189 in Vermont in particular, all ~2 miles of it)

The Gunflint Trail, a couple weeks ago.  (It's like 57 miles long.)

After thinking about it I realized I've driven western I-88 but since it's contained entirely in Illinois it's probably not that much of an accomplishment.

The next time try the Sawbill Trail out of Tofte. The reward at the end is just as nice terminating at the BWCA, but it is only 24 miles long. Unfortunately, it is also a gravel road.

I wondered about the lack of I-50 myself ! AND,  Is there an I-60??

I also wondered why there are "two" I-84's and I-86's One set in Utah/Idaho/Oregon and the other in Southern New England/NY/PA

One end of West Rock Avenue to the other, and one end of Orchard Hill Court to the other.

Oh, and one end of Interstate 270 to the other.

EDIT: Thank you seafarer john. I too have driven from one end of U.S. 1 to the other. And I've hitchhiked U.S. 1 from New Haven to Miami.

I've probably, over the past 65 years of driving, traveled the entire length of US Rt 1. I know I've been on both ends - Kent ME and Key West, FL. Before the creation of the Interstate system Rt 1 was the coastal route in New England, so, I'm pretty sure I've travelled all of it at one time or another from the northern end to Washington, DC. After that it gets a little dicey because Rt 17 was the coastal route
and Rt 1 went inland, although I think that's the route we picked up in Georgia once when driving from New Orleans to NYC. And after Georgia Rt 1 was the only road to get to Key West in the old days- and still is from Miami on.

                                                Cheers, John

I forgot about I5.  From Tijuana to Vancouver.  Most of the 5 through California is BORING!

While I haven't traveled any major interstates from end to end, I do have an interesting story.

If you are headed north on I 95 through Philadelphia on your way to Maine from Florida, you're in for a big surprise when you hit my area. I 95 north comes to an abrupt end, and it turns into I 295 south! To travel straight through NJ, people are supposed to take the Delaware Memorial Bridge into NJ and take the NJ Turnpike straight through. If you follow signs for I 95 through Philadelphia, the road ends and turns south within 5 miles of entering NJ. Can't tell you how many cars with Florida plates pull over and check their maps right under the "I 95 North Ends - Begin I 295 South" sign.

There are less cars now because of GPS nav systems, but still a pretty common sight!

I am shocked that you haven't been on HWY 50. I have traversed this stretch  of road more times than I can remember. (mostly hitchhiking)  from Salt Lake City to Cincinnati. Not the whole route but a good portion of it. You missed out on the best sopapillas ever in Pueblo, Colo. ( and green chile)
