nocarolina jonjax, I will never consider Ian Anderson to be a "pale imitation" of anybody. I saw Jethro Tull in concert four times back in the 1970s, and each time they were nothing short of brilliant. Hey, I respect your admiration for the group Jethro Tull as I too as stated before am a fan and have 4 of their albums in my collection. I also saw them live, sadly only 1 time. However, as good as the band is there is no doubt, even by Ian's admission that he bases his style on Rhasaan Roland Kirk the jazz multi-insturmentalist. Are you familiar with Rahsaan? Check out his his early 1960s albums with him playing flute and you'll hear the nuances of Ian. Most UK groups based their music on 1950s blues and RnB groups as that is what they heard in their formative years. Michael Jackson copped his style of dancing from Jackie Wilson, very few musicians or groups are innovators, most are continuations of those that came before them and shaped their careers as they were coming up.

Greetings! In earlier years, the most of us were Jethro Tull Fans, Heavy Horses is my fav. song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDYK5SBnVaQ Saw the band a few years back in Hamburg/Germany, a frustration, wasted money. Kind regards Michael P.S. There was a special "Christmas-Album", I do not remember the correct title, sold my complete record collection years ago, this was a nice album...

Ian couldn't play a flute and a tenor and an alto up his nose at the same time like Rahsaan could. Seriously, I saw Tull in '71 on the Aqualung tour and thought they put on a really good show. Benefit is still my fave Tull album, but I lost interest after Passion Play.

Looks like we have to hook people up with a little Roland Kirk.... http://www.youtube.com/wa...Vc&feature=related Kirk being great doesn't mean Anderson is exactly chopped liver, btw. The men worked in different milieus is all. Both men have a vision, both men realized it as best they could through their music. Honestly, both artists leave me a little cold. I never caught on to 3 Sided Dream; I respected the artistry, but didn't care for the art. The early stuff, good hard bop; but not ground-breaking. Tull, well, yeah, I had Aqualung. So did everyone else. I'll listen to it on the radio, but I don't pay for it.

I guess there is some truth to what's been said about Jethro Tull, since their first two albums, from the late '60s, were strictly R&B music. That is why you won't find those first two in my CD library; my musical tastes don't include R&B.

Yes, Bill, those are the two albums that I'm talking about, numbers one and two. Both are primarily R&B oriented, and they really don't do anything for me. Tull's third album, Benefit, has two or three songs of that style, but, for the most part, it's a great album.

Niagara Golly gee - what an original concept! Wonder if they ever heard of Keith Emerson? Decades ago, Lenny Bernstein had a show I think was called "Music for Young People". He tried to mix pop & classic. I seem to remember The Nice being on the show & Keieth sticking daggers into the keyboard to hold sustained notes during the performance. I don't remember Lenny's reaction.

I'm sure Keith had heard of Yes, since they were formed in '68, the year after Keith started playing classically oriented rock with The Nice. Surely you're not implying that Keith Emerson copied Yes? And since I saw Carl with ELP in '71, I know who he played with.
